MAY 16

See our beautiful Maitland Art Center campus as you join Assistant Curator of Art, Bethany Gray, for a Curator's Tour of the Center this Thursday, May 16 at 10 a.m. Journey through the beautiful grounds and learn about what the Art Center was like when the Bok Fellows lived at the Research Studio, as you experience the artwork featured throughout campus. “Detour, Not Your Mother’s Musical” debuts at The Orlando Fringe Festival, which takes place from May 15 through May 28 at Loch Haven Park. It will share the stage with 100 other productions during this two-week period. “Detour, Not Your Mother’s Musical” is a comedic romp about an intervention five friends take to help their gal pal, Ashley, rebound from her 20-year marriage, which evaporated overnight. They whisk their best friend to a resort to help her cope, rediscover themselves, learn about the joys of younger men, the pitfalls of plastic surgery and a thing or two about battery operated toys. Orange Audubon Society presents Coral Conservation and Research Initiatives at the Florida Aquarium by Dr. Kathy Heym. This talk will highlight the research endeavors that The Florida Aquarium’s Center for Conservation and its collaborators have undertaken related to coral conservation efforts in the Florida Keys. Networking at its finest: Each year the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce coordinates a series of Business After Hours events to facilitate networking for its members. Each event is hosted by a different member business or organization in the community as a way to introduce members to its location, staff and products or services. Members look forward to these networking events and the chance to learn more about the community.

The next event is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 16 at CenterState Bank, 1500 Lee Road, Winter Park.

The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and Small Business Resource Network have partnered on a monthly program for small business owners called the Small Business Education Series. This month Eric Wright, director of business development with ISIS Solutions and Results, will share insights on working with the Federal Government during his presentation, "Doing Business with the Government." It’s from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. May 17 at the Winter Park Welcome Center, 151 W. Lyman Ave.

Special Olympics Florida is hosting its annual State Summer Games this week at ESPN’S Wide World of Sports May 17 and 18. It’s the largest single event offered by Special Olympics Florida and set the stage for acts of courage, triumph and joy for nearly 2,000 athletes as they shatter stereotypes about people with disabilities. Central Florida Community Arts’ monthly cabaret series continues in May with the one and only Katy Reinsel Willis starring in a Mother’s Day themed show entitled “Mother Knows Best.” The show will take place at 7:30 p.m. on May 17-18 and at 6:30 p.m. on May 19 at the The Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Building, 1111 N. The American Heart Association's Go Red For Women Luncheon is from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. May 17 at the Waldorf Astoria at Bonnet Creek – 14200 Bonnet Creek Resort Lane in Orlando. Now in its 10th year, Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s nationwide movement that celebrates the energy, passion, and power of women to band together and wipe out heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 4 killers of women in America. The second annual Winter Park Dog Walk will be presented by Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida and will benefit The Lost Pets Foundation.

The Dog Walk will be held from 8 a.m. until noon and start at the Cady Way Trail phase 1 in Winter Park next to the YMCA pool. Participants can walk along the trail for as long or short a distance as they wish. All proceeds from the $20 Dog Walk registration fee benefit The Lost Pets Foundation. “Unlike many walk/run events where each participant pays a registration fee, the whole family can walk with just one $20 donation,” explained Ms Charuhas. Family fun at the A&H! Celebrate May Flower Power at Family Days at the Museum this Saturday, May 18 at 1 p.m. at the A&H’s Maitland Historical Museum. Families will learn about spring traditions of the past such as May Day flowers and dancing around the may pole. Guests will make a beautiful bouquet of tissue flowers to share. The annual Virginia Heights neighborhood yard sale is beyond the usual garage sale. Friends of First Response-Maitland Inc., a 501(c)3 charity that honors and serves Maitland firefighters and police since 2008, presents the annual Kickball charity event on Sunday, May 19, at Keller Road Baseball Complex in Maitland at 1 pm. “Miss Representation,” winner of outstanding documentary at the 2012 Gracie Allen Awards, is coming to Central Florida for a special screening, Wednesday May 22, at Urban ReThink, 625 E. The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce’s Political Update Breakfast hosts political leaders tackling issues critical to our community during a panel discussion. This annual event is an opportunity to meet your elected officials as they share an update on topics facing our state, county and city. Panelists are District 13 State Senator Andy Gardiner, District 30 State Representative Karen Castor Dentel, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, and Winter Park Mayor Ken Bradley. Winter Park High School and the Band Booster Board are pleased to announce the spring concert schedule. The Parks & Recreation Department of the City of Winter Park is pleased to announce the pool at the Winter Park Community Center located at 721 W. The Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College will feature Malick Sidibé’s exuberant photographs of Malian people as they gained independence from France as part of Studio Malick, which opens at the museum May 25. The Art & History Museums – Maitland’s (A&H) next Artist Critique & Conversation takes place on Tuesday, May 28 at 6 p.m. in the A&H’s Germaine Marvel Building, 210 W. A&H Executive Director/CEO Andrea Bailey Cox serves as panelist in a Panel Discussion with Museum Directors on Wednesday, May 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Orlando Museum of Art. Also on the panel is Glen Gentele, Director, Orlando Museum of Art, and Ena Heller, Bruce A. Beal Director, Cornell Fine Arts Museum. Art in the Chambers Featuring Artist Robert Carter will include massive portraiture, 5 feet tall by 5 feet wide, as well as selections of his landscapes. In addition to painting, Mr. Carter is also proud to announce the release of his new novel, “Designated Hitter.”

The Art & History Museums – Maitland (A&H) presents two exhibitions highlighting works of André Smith (1880-1959), noted artist, architect, author and founder of the A&H’s Maitland Art Center. The exhibitions begin on May 31 in the A&H’s Maitland Art Center Galleries, 231 W. Packwood Ave. An Opening Reception is held on May 31 from 6 to 8 PM. The Art & History Museums – Maitland (A&H) proudly offers Culture Camp at the A&H this summer. Participants can choose from a variety of week-long camps, or can choose from a selection of workshops designed for education and fun. This year, the A&H debuts Pajama Parties, a new program of themed parties that run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. All classes, workshops, and camps are taught by experienced A&H staff and professional artists who have been screened and background checked. Through the end of May, the Maitland Public Library at 501 S. Maitland Ave. is hosting an exhibition of Maury Hurt’s artwork to honor him in the wake of his passing.

The exhibition opens on April 26 and continues through May 19 in Gallery 4 of the A&H’s Maitland Art Center Galleries, 231 W.
