MAY 9

The Central Florida Anthropological Society’s May Lecture “A forgotten community: Archaeology of old St. Joseph, Gulf County, Florida” by Christopher Hunt is from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 9 at Leu Gardens.

On Thursday, May 9 at 5:30 p.m., acclaimed author and documentary filmmaker Bill Belleville will speak on “The Other Historic Preservation: Salvaging Florida’s Natural Heritage.” Belleville is particularly well-known for his documentary “In Marjorie’s Wake,” which retraced author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ famed 1933 trip exploring the St. John’s River.

Workforce Central Florida will link veterans with employers at the inaugural Paychecks 4 Patriots Hiring Fair. Veterans, retired military and their spouses are invited to attend from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 10 at the National Guard Armory, 2809 S. Ferncreek Drive, Orlando. Nationally, about 22 percent, or one in five veterans, were unemployed in 2011, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics. The A&H Associates, volunteer corps of the Art & History Museums – Maitland (A&H), in partnership with Performing Arts of Maitland, proudly present the first concert in the 2013 Summer Concert Series at 7 p.m. May 10 in the A&H’s beautiful Main Garden, located at 231 W. Packwood Ave., Maitland. The series kicks-off with by popular Central Florida band The Hindu Cowboys, whose sound has been described as “rich with folk, traditional string band and organic corn-fed roots music all topped off with retro-country gravy.” Vist artandhistory.org for more information.

As part of the Good Morning Winter Park program Rollins College and Becky Wilson will disuss plans for a Rollins baseball stadium and the potential for minor league baseball coming to Winter Park. It’s at 7:45 a.m. May 10 at the Winter Park Welcome Center, 151 W. Lyman Avenue.

A Gift for Teaching and A1 Assets are teaming up to host an electronics recycling drive to benefit local students in need. The event will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at A Gift For Teaching, located at 6501 Magic Way, Building 400C, in Orlando (near the intersection of John Young Parkway and Oak Ridge Road).

The Science of Wine returns to the Orlando Science Center. Drink wine and learn about it too with the help of Akerman, Southern Wine and Spirits, Tim’s Wine Market and Constellation Academy of Wine’s Luis Torres. On Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Art & History Museums — Maitland holds an official Plein Air Paint Day with Josette Urso. Painters from around Central Florida are encouraged to come and create alongside Urso. Guests will discover the tools and techniques Urso uses to create her widely-collected paintings, as they enjoy the beauty of the A&H’s Maitland Art Center campus. The city of Maitland Leisure Services Department in conjunction with the city of Maitland Police Department is hosting a S.A.F.E. Class on Wednesday, May 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maitland Community Park meeting room. Please join us for this free informative class. Class size is limited to the first 12 signed up.
