Harriett’s Park Avenue Fashion Week will bring the experience of high fashion to Winter Park through Saturday, Oct. 20. Central Park’s West Meadow is transformed into a fashion paradise featuring a 20,000-square-foot, air-conditioned tent with a full runway and lounge area modeled after New York Fashion Week’s Bryant Park. International Uilleann Piping Day will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 20. It's an opportunity for uilleann (pronounced ill-in) pipers to share their passion for the Irish bagpipes with communities around the world. This year the Florida Irish Pipers will hold a workshop at the Winter Park Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. Included will be a description of the instrument, discussion of the history, demonstrations and an opportunity for the public to play a set of uilleann pipes. The family friendly event is free and will be followed by a traditional Irish music session at Fiddler's Green Irish Pub and Eatery in Winter Park from 3 to 6 p.m.

Artistic Director Dario J. Moore will lead an interactive evening of dance and dialogue at The Center for Contemporary Dance in Winter Park from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21. Returning from a month-long residency with the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Moore will share insights gained in his creative process and debut evolving new solo works developed over the course of the residency. Loosely structured, the evening will allow Moore to guide attendees from dialogues to dance performances to opt-in creative exercises. On Sunday, Oct. 21, the Winter Park Sunday Running Group of the Orlando Runners Club will conduct its annual drive to collect blankets for residents of the Men’s Pavilion at Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. The main collection effort will take place in Winter Park at Park Avenue and Welbourne Avenue starting at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, prior to the Sunday Running Group’s weekly run starting at 7 a.m. All local runners are invited to join in that run and all people in the community are invited to donate used or new blankets for these homeless men. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art opens its 2012–2013 season in October with two exhibitions that highlight recent acquisitions and another that provides fresh perspective on the glassmaking techniques at Tiffany Studios. One of the most important new additions to the Museum’s collection is Lockwood de Forest’s oil painting “The Wreck,” 1880. “The Wreck” is a recent bequest from the estate of de Forest’s great-granddaughter. This large Orientalist desert scene is the subject of a Morse focus exhibition opening Oct. 23. Also on Oct. 23, the Morse will open an informal installation of other recent acquisitions, which include Blue Magnolia and Zephyr Lily pottery from Roseville and a late 19th-century oil painting attributed to James Henry Beard. The League of Women Voters of Orange County and Rollins College Democracy Project will host a lively community forum focused on helpful questions and answers for this year’s Nov. 6 election at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. The forum is free and open to League members, the public and Rollins students. Speakers and facilitators will guide participants through new changes to the voting process for 2012, address common myths, provide helpful web-based election resources and cover the pros and cons on this year’s 11 constitutional ballot amendments. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center, in partnership with the Wells’Built Museum of African-American History and Culture, will have an Oct. 24 public program on the history of civil rights in Central Florida, with a special focus on Orange County Public School desegregation. Featured speaker will be Rep. Geraldine Thompson, founder of the Wells’Built and a member of Florida’s House of Representatives. The event, free of charge, will be at the Holocaust Center, 851 N. Maitland Ave. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m., and the doors will open one hour prior so visitors can view the exhibit, “The Civil Rights Struggle, African-American GIs, and Germany,” which is on display at the Center through the end of December.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, the Maitland Senior Center will host its first annual health fair from noon to 3 p.m. Check out new trends and speak with health care professionals, housing specialists, area service providers, Medicare advantage plan providers, home care providers and hearing specialists. The event is free, with free health and hearing screenings. The Maitland Fire Department will also be offering flu shots.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, the Winter Park Public Library will host a star panel of chefs and cookbook authors at “Books and Cooks,” a culinary-themed celebration of literature. Guests will enjoy a lively panel discussion, a book signing, cocktails and access to food trucks provided by The Food Truck Bazaar. The opening program of the 2012 Bach Festival Society Choral Masterworks series presents music by six contemporary composers and celebrates the themes of peace and light in two performances by the renowned Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra. The two performances will take place at Knowles Memorial Chapel at Rollins college, but with the pre-concert talks in the music building at Rollins. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center will have the premiere of a new Readers Theater piece as part of its annual remembrance of Kristallnacht. On Sunday, Nov. 4, the drama “Witness” will be presented at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of the Jewish Community Center in Maitland. “Witness” tells the story of Kristallnacht, the night of Nov. 9 and 10, 1938, through the eyes and words of characters who were swept up in the chaos of the night.

The Central Florida Watercolor Society will hold its next monthly meeting on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at the Maitland Art Center, Marvel Building, 231 Packwood Ave. A short business meeting will be followed with a demonstration by award-winning watercolorist Don Andrews.
