The Walk n’ Talk for Life aims to encourage community members to engage in fitness that instills a life-long healthy lifestyle. The legacy for pediatric nurse practitioner Tori Sheahan, a consummate caretaker and champion for the health of local youth, will be continued at this walk on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Harbor Park in Baldwin Park. The city of Winter Park is proud to present the 16th annual Dinner on the Avenue, a unique, fun-filled dining experience has become the social event of the year. Tables will go on sale Monday, Jan. 9, at 8 a.m. at the Winter Park Community Center located at 721 W. New England Ave. Gather a table of friends, family, co-workers or neighbors to dine under the stars on beautiful Park Avenue. Tables of eight are available for just $125 each. Only the table, white linen tablecloth and chairs are provided – everything else is up to you. Get creative with table set-up and let your appetites decide whether you bring your own potluck dinner or hire a local caterer to satisfy your palate. Creativity is encouraged and each group is challenged to develop its own unique look and individual décor. Awards will be presented to winners in various categories including most colorful, most elegant, most original, best TV/movie-themed and honorable mentions. The 45th Central Florida Scottish Highland Games brings food, drink, sport and music to Winter Springs on Jan. 14 and 15. New Hope for Kids’ Center for Grieving Children is offering training to become a volunteer grief support group facilitator. The Center for Grieving Children in Maitland provides grief support for children and families who have experienced the death of a loved one. Newcomers of Central Florida Inc. will celebrate the new year with a Jan. 19 luncheon featuring Rev. Shawn Garvey, a John Denver tribute artist who is also a senior minister at the First Congregational Church of Winter Park. A talented guitarist and vocalist, Rev. Garvey entertains audiences with his inspiring renditions of classic John Denver songs. Active in musical theater, choir and band for more than 30 years, Rev. Garvey has also recorded three albums and performed with such legendary entertainers as Livingston Taylor and Steve Weisberg, John Denver's lead guitarist. Our world today is divided, bifurcated between the zero-sum binaries of win/lose, good and evil, either/or, profane and holy. Franciscan activist Richard Rohr invites us to see beyond these social entrapments toward the beauty of paradox, a hopeful horizon of unitive consciousness where everything belongs, at the Gladdening Light Symposium 2017. He will be joined by Haitian surrealist painter Frantz Zephirin. It will begin with an opening reception Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. and will run through Jan. 29. Running through Sunday, Jan. 8, the city of Winter Park will host Winter in the Park, the city’s annual holiday ice skating rink at Central Park West Meadow on the corner of New York Avenue and Morse Boulevard. Winter in the Park will be open Monday through Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m.; Friday, 3 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 8 p.m. See website for extended school holiday hours.
