As the Art & History Museums – Maitland says farewell to Clyde Butcher’s Nature’s Places of Spiritual Sanctuary this weekend, it prepares to host a homecoming of its own. Join the reunion as the A&H’s Maitland Art Center welcomes back some of Central Florida’s most talented artists for the collaborative exhibition, “Participation: Classes of 2013-2015.” The exhibition opening from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 29, is part of the A&H’s Culture Pop! event, where guests can interact with the artists and the artwork. The city of Winter Park announces a summer of first-rate baseball and community-building fun with the 2015 Florida Collegiate Summer League. The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs’ season opener will be played against the Sanford River Rats at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 5 at Rollins College Alfond Stadium, home field of the Diamond Dawgs, located at 801 Orange Ave., (at the corner of Orange and Aragon avenues) in Winter Park. AARP will hold a driver safety course from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5 at the Altamonte Springs Mall C.O.P.S. Center, located at 451 E. Altamonte Drive. Join the biggest party celebrating kids with special needs at the 13th annual Make ‘M Smile Festival running from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at the Lake Eola Amphitheater in downtown Orlando. This free event, put on by Nathaniel’s Hope, includes a “friendship stroll,” food, bounce houses, clowns and live music from contemporary Christian artists! As the summer season draws near, the Maitland Symphony Orchestra has been busy preparing a concert for all to enjoy at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, at the Maitland Presbyterian Church, located at 341 N. Orlando Ave. The program includes favorite selections of the past: The Shostakovich “Festival Overture,” Elgar’s “Nimrod,” and Schumann’s Concerto in A Minor, with rising pianist Ian Levitan. Pick another favorite from “Forrest Gump” and “Star Trek Through the Ages” and enjoy another MSO favorite when guest erhu player Rui Yang performs in “Tea in Chinese Camp.” The concert is free, but donations are accepted. Calling all book clubs, local businesses, and community groups: The Heart of Florida United Way is collecting new and gently used books to benefit low-income K-12 students for its annual Day of Action. Book drives can be held at offices, churches or other organizations through May 25. On June 23, volunteers are also needed to distribute donations to children at 20 United Way partner agencies, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, Winter Park Day Nursery, and Schools and Communities: Together for Tomorrow, among others. United Way’s Day of Action is a community-wide event that aims to reduce summer reading loss, which is the gradual decline of reading proficiency while children are away from the classroom. By providing low-income students access to books, the nonprofit hopes to enhance literacy over the summer months. Last year, United Way collected nearly 20,000 books. Orange County is hosting the Mayor’s Neighborhood Challenge. A friendly, free competition which gives neighborhood and community organizations activities that can help their neighborhood thrive by becoming more healthy, green and involved. Participants fill out scorecards and are provided with toolkits. Neighborhoods that complete this Challenge will be recognized based on their level of achievement, and winners will be honored during the Orange County Community Conference on July 18 and receive great prizes.
