The 10th Annual Global Peace Film Festival will be held through Sunday, Sept. 23, in various locations in downtown Orlando and Winter Park. The festival includes 44 films from six continents as well as seven films from local Florida filmmakers. From Wednesday, Sept. 19, through Sunday, Sept. 23, films will be presented in Winter Park at the Sun Trust Auditorium, 330 Winter Park Plaza, at Rollins College and at the Winter Park Library. In downtown Orlando, films will be shown at the Cobb Plaza Cinema Café and the FAMU Law School. Tickets to GPFF screenings are $8 each and are on sale now. Cornerstone Hospice will be conducting two days of volunteer training for the required certification to become a Hospice Volunteer. Winter Park residents will soon be given a chance to experience The Winter Park Food Truck Fiesta – Winter Park Style at Fleet Peeples Park located at 2000 S. Lakemont Ave. The first opportunity will be Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will continue every fourth Saturday of the month at the park.

Food Truck Crazy, promoters of Food Truck Wars and other food truck events, will feature 10 of Central Florida’s finest gourmet food trucks with cuisine choices ranging from Thai to veggie to desserts, and everything in between. There will also be light music provided and children’s activities such as face painting and balloonists. Proceeds will benefit local Winter Park charities. The Holocaust Center in Maitland will have a reception to mark the opening of its new exhibit, “The Civil Rights Struggle, African-American GIs, and Germany.” The reception will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, and will feature Dr. Alzo Reddick, the director of Special Programs and Defense Transition Services at UCF. Special guests will include two local Tuskegee Airmen, Daniel Keel of Clermont and Richard Hall of Maitland. One of the nearly forgotten stories of the Holocaust is the history of African-American GIs. The Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens will feature “Life in the Fast Lane: The Art of David Delong” from Tuesday, Oct. 2, through April 14. The exhibition focuses on Delong’s belief that motorcycles provide the perfect metaphor for life and art. The original works on display will focus on the culture of motorcycle racing and will include oil painting, pen and ink drawings, and etchings from the late 1950s to 2001.

“Mindfulness, Life Satisfaction & Inner Peace,” a five-week meditation series, will be held at the Polasek Gardens from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday in October. The free show, presented by Doug Rhodehamel, features works of art created with the same technique used by Dr. Frankenstein, parts and pieces bolted or stitched together to form a single horrible unit.

“The Mayors’ Sole Challenge,” a 30-minute fun walk through scenic Winter Park, is Saturday, Oct. 6. Festivities will begin at 8 a.m. at the main stage in Central Park. This friendly community competition between Eatonville, Maitland and Winter Park will bring families, friends, kids and colleagues together for a celebration of community and health. Each city is challenged to see which community has the most sole by turning out the most participants. After the walk is completed, festivities will continue in Central Park with an old-fashioned celebration including food, singing and dancing. Macedonia Missionary Baptist Choir will provide soulful entertainment. Florida Hospital and CentraCare will offer free health screenings. And in addition to pedometers and other prize giveaways, the first 400 walkers will each receive a free T-shirt. The Mayors’ Sole Challenge is presented by Healthy Central Florida, a community-based partnership founded by Florida Hospital and the Winter Park Health Foundation. Central Florida Sports Complex will have a grand opening from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. Food, snacks and beverages will be provided.
