Call to artists

The Art & History Museums – Maitland (A&H) announces a call to artists to participate in its 2013-2014 Artist-in-Action (AIA) program. The application deadline is June 15. Applications can be found at artandhistory.org/artists-in-action

Confessions of an artist

The A&H is participating in power2give.org, a new and exciting crowd-funding project. Its first project is called True Confessions. Taking inspiration from the popular oral history project StoryCorps (and adding a little bit of “The Real World”), A&H wants to understand the Artist-in-Residence experience from the resident perspective through video documentaries - and share it with all of you. Visit powertogive.org for more information.

Cooking champ

Twenty-five-year-old Allison Weldon, a line cook at a restaurant in Winter Park, is the Southeast Regional Winner in the national “2013 Best Young Chef” competition sponsored by the Confrérié de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. On June 8, she will compete against nine other regional winners from throughout the U.S. and the Hawaiian and Caribbean Islands for top honors in the national finals at Chicago’s Kendall College, one of the country’s top culinary schools.

Summer servers

Rollins College recently kicked off its SummerSERVE initiative with a service project at Fern Creek Elementary School. Created by the Office of Community Engagement (OCE), Human Resources, Alumni Relations and several other offices, SummerSERVE was designed to engage Rollins staff, faculty, students and alumni in meaningful service projects throughout the summer. During the project, Rollins students assisted teachers with in-class projects and organized the school’s food and clothing pantry. The relationship between Rollins and Fern Creek includes more than a decade of involvement including mentoring, landscaping, painting and the donation of more than 1,000 books to the Fern Creek library.
