Community works to Stamp Out Hunger!

Stamping out hunger

On Saturday, May 11, Central Florida letter carriers helped Stamp Out Hunger! across both Central Florida and America. Now in its 21st year, the Stamp Out Hunger! food drive has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive. In 2012, generous Americans donated more than 70 million pounds of food, which marked the ninth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected by letter carriers. This year’s food drive supporters include the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, Campbell Soup Company, Valpak, U.S. Postal Service, United Way, AFL-CIO, Feeding America, Uncle Bob’s Storage, AARP, GLS, Source Direct Plastics, Publix and Valassis.

Funds from fine arts

Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando (JFS), the Orlando-based non-profit, human service agency, is pleased to announce that it raised $57,030 as a result of its Fine Art Fiesta 35th anniversary celebration. The event was held on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the Orlando Museum of Art.

Mary Hwang of Winter Park High School has received a National Merit Scholarship.

Money from Jubilee

The Orange Blossom Jubilee 2013, Winter Park Day Nursery's signature annual fund-raising event, raised more than $50,000 to benefit the day nursery’s efforts to provide high-quality preschool education to local children. More than 130 people attended the event, which was held April 27, 2013, at the Winter Park Racquet Club.

JFS food drive

Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando (JFS), the Orlando-based non-profit, human service agency, is pleased to announce its partnership with the Orlando City Soccer Club (OCSC) in hosting a food drive until Friday, May 25, 2013.

Women work to rebuild

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area recently concluded National Women Build Week, which raised more than $150,000 to build townhomes in Stag Horn Villas – the nonprofit’s first multifamily community. Contributions were made by corporate sponsors, donors and the women volunteers. From May 6 to 11, more than 250 local women volunteered to install siding, caulk and paint the final building in Stag Horn. The weeklong event closed with a special pre-Mother’s Day dedication ceremony, where four single mothers received keys to their new townhomes.

Dean's listers

Furman University in South Carolina has announced its dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester, including Maitland’s Morgan Hobbs, and Sarah Lambert, Alicia Leary, Hannah Lyden and Michelle Raymond, all from Winter Park.

Orange County Super Scholars

Winter Park High School students Joulia Likhanskaia, Aaron Kennon, Mary Hwang, Nathan Einhorn, Mason Montgomery, Madeleine Hill, Demetrie Luke, Rocco English, Jessica Kast, Trevor Byrne, Jillian Dukes, Matthew Domescek, Vaishali Mehta, John Lindsey, Sylvie Wise, Hunter Chadwick, Everett Hamilton, Harrison Thayer, Samuel Ward, Alicia Tarver and J. Brandon Ward were announced as Super Scholars by Orange County Public Schools for being accepted to the top 20 colleges and universities in the country for 2013. Edgewater High School students Pau Kim, David Neitzel and Gwendolyn Johnson also received the honor.

Berry graduate

Gaby Lugo of Maitland, FL, graduated from Berry College with a BS degree in Biology.

Memorial 70% of goal

The capital campaign to build and endow a Memorial to the Fallen adjacent to the new VA hospital at Lake Nona, has achieved 70% of its $3 million campaign goal, according to Jerry Pierce, Chairman of the Central Florida Memorial Park Foundation. The Foundation was presented with anonymous cashier's check for $ 300,0000 bringing the total funds raised to over $ 2.1 million dollars, according to Pierce. Academic scholar

Savannah Maensivu of Winter Park, Fla., was awarded an academic scholarship to attend Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. Maensivu received the College's Odyssey Distinction Award for professional and leadership development.
