Walk in the holiday parade

WinterParkLostPets.com will welcome community members to walk with them in the Winter Park Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 1. Walkers will meet between 7:30 and 8 a.m. and the location will be announced on the website and Facebook page. Suspect in October kidnappings arrested

The Winter Park Police Department, in cooperation with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and other area law enforcement agencies, arrested Farley B. Curry Jr., a 28-year-old black male, on charges related to the October carjacking of a Winter Park woman. He is also suspected in another October carjacking. The Winter Park Police Department worked in coordination with the FDLE, Orange County Sherriff’s Office, Orlando Police Department, Eatonville Police Department, Casselberry Police Department and Maitland Police Department.

WPRK has a new weekday lineup

From 9 to 10 a.m. every weekday morning, WPRK will host an esteemed Rollins College faculty member, as well as students and guests, to discuss hot topics within their field of expertise. The show will explain how the topics apply to Rollins, Central Florida and the global community. The lineup includes: Monday, “Critical Media and Cultural Studies” with Dr. Nick Marx; Tuesday, “The International Scene” with Dr. Stephen Day and Shahin Alhumaydhi; Wednesday, “Community Affairs” with Kenne Goldman and Sarah Elbadri; Thursday, “The “A” TEAM, theater, art, english and music” with Erik Keevan; Friday, “Punkonomics” with Dr. Beni Balak and Jesse Velez. Winter Park student working hard at Heidelberg

Samuel Conde of Winter Park is serving as a member of the Heidelberg University Student Senate and the Berg Events Council this academic year. Conde is a sophomore majoring in education and political science.

Towel drive for Seniors First

Seniors First Inc. has launched its holiday gift drive, “Operation Warm Fuzzies.” New towels or towel sets and throw blankets can be dropped off at the Seniors First office at 5395 L.B. McLeod Road; Fields Fiat Orlando at 131 N. Orange Ave.; or the North Orlando Spine Center at 434 State Road 434, Suite 108, in Longwood. Gifts will also be accepted at the 23rd Annual Turkey Trot, held at Lake Eola on Thanksgiving morning. It runs until Nov. 30. Visit SeniorsFirstinc.org

Maitland Police recognized for traffic and DUI enforcement

Two of Maitland Police Department’s officers and the department as a whole were recognized by two separate organizations last month for their efforts at traffic safety and DUI prevention. Officer Andrew Moore was presented a top producer award by the Department of Transportation for his work during the annual Click it or Ticket traffic safety campaign. Sgt. Steve Lorengo was recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving as the top DUI officer of the year. The Maitland Police Department as a whole was given special recognition by MADD for its efforts at fighting drunk driving and for traffic safety.

Holiday decorations at ReStores

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area’s two local ReStores have holiday decorations like fake Christmas trees, ornaments, exterior Christmas lighting fixtures and nativity scenes available at 30 to 70 percent off retail price. The Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens is in need of new volunteers to lead museum tours, assist with garden maintenance and answer guest questions. Get your flu shot

Flu shots for children and adults are offered at the Orange County Health Department’s Central Health Center at 832 W. Central Blvd., Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a first-come, first-served walk-in basis. The immunization program is closed the second Friday of each month.

In Seminole County, flu shots for children and adults are available at the Seminole County Health Department’s Sanford location at 400 W. Airport Blvd., Monday through Friday 8 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. The immunization clinic is only open from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

Help seniors file their taxes

Volunteers are needed for AARP’S Tax-Aide Program. Tax-Aide counselors help prepare tax returns and assist with filing requirements for older taxpayers and others. Individuals with an aptitude for tax preparation, experience in filing personal returns and good communication skills are urged to sign up. AARP membership is not required to be a volunteer with this program. Volunteer counselors are trained by AARP in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. An orientation will be held in December and training for volunteer counselors begins around Jan. 7 in the Orlando area.
