Contest honors students’ artwork

As part of its 75th anniversary celebration, CFE Federal Credit Union sponsored the 2011-2012 Education Guide Art Contest. Students of all grades in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and Volusia counties of Florida were invited to submit their artwork into the competition. Four first-place winners were awarded $500 each and four second place winners received $250. The contest theme was “People Helping People,” which offered students the opportunity to show themselves, or someone they know, helping people.

Judging of artwork was based on four groupings according to grade: K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. With more than 1,600 entries, 40 finalists — the top 10 in each group — and their families were invited to a special event where the students were recognized and the winners announced.

Boot Camp helps people find employment

Goodwill Industries of Central Florida recently hosted its “2012 Employment Boot Camp.” More than 430 people attended the free event and participated in mock interviews, received résumé critiques, and took ability and interest tests. In addition, some found employment — Starwood Hotels and Resorts hired 10 people on the spot. From January to April, Goodwill served more than 9,757 Central Florida clients through its job training programs, and of those, 1,161 secured employment. For more information, visit goodwillcfl.org

Annie Russell Theatre celebrates 80 years

Since 1932, the Annie Russell Theatre has played a role in the Central Florida community. As we celebrate 80 years of Annie, we also celebrate 80 years of leading ladies with a season dedicated to the not-so-weaker sex. The comedy “The Miss Firecracker Contest” opens the season in September, followed by Tony Award-winning musical “The Drowsy Chaperone.” Spring 2013 brings the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Anna in the Tropics,” followed by the annual Rollins Dance spring concert. The season concludes with S. Joseph Nassif, the department chair from 1982-2003, guest directing the classic comedy “She Stoops to Conquer,” which starred Annie Russell in the 1912 production. Special celebratory events will be announced later in the summer. Packages are $65 each and $80 for opening night. Call 407-646-2253 for subscriptions or visit rollins.edu/annierussell

Enzian recognized for creative program

Walt Disney World Resort recognized Enzian as a recipient of the 2012 Disney Helping Kids Shine Grant with a $20,000 check dedicated to the KidFest Young Filmmakers’ Summer Camp, an educational program that provides a hands-on, immersive experience in the art of filmmaking. The award recognizes organizations that inspire creativity and innovation, encourage a sense of compassion for others, and promote the health and well being of families. The funds awarded to Enzian will be used to provide camp scholarships for students from low-income families to help provide all KidFest students with an experience in filmmaking. In addition to Enzian, organizations from Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake and Polk counties received grants totaling $1.5 million, which is a record for the Disney Helping Kids Shine program. 4 Rivers, mi Tomatina among restaurants to donate to foundation

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the James Beard Foundation, five Central Florida restaurants will join together and pay homage to culinary pioneer James Beard by adding a limited-time entrée to their menus. This first-time promotion includes participants in the national Serving Up James Beard campaign that pledge to donate $1 from each dish sold to the James Beard Foundation Silver Anniversary Scholarship Drive, which supports aspiring culinary students in their pursuit of success in the hospitality industry.

Participating restaurants include 4 Rivers Smokehouse, mi Tomatina, The Rusty Spoon, Cress, K Restaurant, Spanish River Grill and Taverna Opa Orlando.
