OCPS wins innovation award

Orange County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services was awarded the silver level of the 2015 Summer BreakSpot Challenge Award for the Innovation in Operation category at the state summer school meeting in November. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner, Adam Putnam, commended the district on providing nutritious meals in low-income areas during the summer months. OCPS FNS retrofitted a school bus with food service equipment to be able to deliver food to locations without equipment of their own. During summer 2015, the OCPS mobile meals bus made stops at two Orange County Public Libraries, Monday through Friday, all summer long. The OCPS meals bus had a significant impact on the community around both the Hiawassee Branch Library and the South Trail Branch Library this summer, serving a combined total of 11,708 student lunches during the 10 weeks of the program. Both locations serve areas where the majority of school aged children are eligible to receive reduced cost meals or meals at no charge during the school year.

Jewish Pavilion receives donation

Special thanks to Seminole Health and Human Services Network from the Jewish Pavilion for its generosity during the holiday season. The group raised $8,400 and distributed it to seven charities, one of which is the Jewish Pavilion. SHHSN is a networking group for professionals in Seminole County who work with the elderly. The group meets the last Wednesday of every month at VITAS Healthcare in Maitland. The Jewish Pavilion received a check for $1,200 from SHHSN.
