Winter Park-based Lighthouse Central Florida has launched Lighthouse Works!, a new business that will provide job opportunities for people who are blind or have low vision. Lighthouse Works! business enterprise program will employ individuals with visual disabilities to produce goods and services for federal, state and local government agencies, as well as private businesses. University of Central Florida military and government leaders celebrated the opening of a new partnership building on Oct. 28 that will strengthen one of the region’s cornerstone industries. UCF’s Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) and several military agencies share the Partnership III building in the Central Florida Research Park, which will allow UCF and its partners to expand their research capabilities and pursue additional funding in such areas as medical simulation, high-performance computing and mobile applications for training. The Central Florida Chapter of Credit Unions held its annual charity golf tournament at Timacuan Golf and Country Club in Lake Mary on Friday, Sept. 17. The $5,000 in proceeds from raffle ticket sales were donated to the Children’s Miracle Network and will be matched for another $5,000 by Co-Op Financial Services through its Miracle Match program. The award-winning SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Program is looking for volunteers. SHINE is a Medicare and health insurance information, counseling and assistance program that is part of the positive aging campaign. Currently, there are about 450 dedicated SHINE volunteers statewide who provide services to Medicare customers, their families and caregivers. SHINE volunteers perform a variety of functions, including providing information, counseling and assistance; making educational presentations to community groups; distributing materials at health fairs, senior fairs and outreach events; and assisting with general program support.
