Five Girl Scouts build butterfly garden

Five of the girls from Girl Scout Troop 1983 in Winter Park completed work on their Girl Scout Gold Award project. Tiana, Ashley, Summer, Allie and Shannon spent the summer working together at Lake Weston Elementary School in Orlando. The girls built a butterfly garden, made butterfly information books, planted a flower garden at the front entrance of the school and collected school supplies for every student.

Eleven members of the Orlando Rowing Club traveled to St. Catherines, Canada, Sept. 2-5, to compete in the 2010 World Rowing Masters Regatta, winning gold in several events. ORC team members competing included rowers Robert Hoppenfeld, Jamieson Thomas, Lesley Silvia, Lindsey Fore, Becky Watt, Kristen Larson, Audrea Huff, Kim Watson, Lynn Sproul and Tara Schweizer, along with coxswain Heather Brooks. The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, in partnership with the Winter Park Institute, Rollins College, has commissioned internationally renowned computer scientist, author and musician Jaron Lanier to write a new work for choir, orchestra and vocal soloists. Members of the Orlando Regional Realtor Association reported completed sales on 2,429 homes in August, which is a 10.91 percent increase over the August 2009 mark of 2,109. To date, Orlando area home sales are up 36.12 percent over this time in 2009.

The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors has unanimously passed a resolution in opposition to Florida Constitutional Amendment 4, which would require a vote to make changes to a local government’s comprehensive land-use plan. Central Florida Realtor Paul Antonelli of Coldwell Banker Ackley Realty has launched a local weekly radio show aimed at helping struggling homeowners. Antonelli, who kicked off his Central Florida Real Estate Talk Show on station Big 810 AM Radio (www.big810am.com) on Aug. 28, has pledged to help one million homeowners.

Mayer-listed artist Marcia Lain Herring was named the Best Artist in Florida by the readers of Florida Monthly magazine. Winter Park is now a medical hub for training future physicians, thanks to a multi-year commitment from the Winter Park Health Foundation totaling $5 million. This will fund the Centre for Family Medicine, which houses the Florida Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program located at Winter Park Memorial Hospital. The gift will allow Florida Hospital to expand their ability to provide family medicine residents with the education, resources and technology they need to receive the highest level of training available.
