Local resident creates endowment

Central Florida resident Kenneth W. Osleger has created a new endowment in support of a scholarship for the West Virginia University College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (CPASS). The Kelly Irene Osleger Endowed Scholarship was established in honor of Osleger’s daughter Kelly. She died of ovarian cancer three years ago at the age of 32. The endowment will provide scholarships for undergraduate and/or graduate students with a preference to physical education teacher education and athletic training majors. The endowment gift amount to CPASS is $100,000.

Maitland teachers recognized with award

Orlando Science Schools teachers Abdulkerim Akyalcin and Ozlem Akyalcin from Maitland have been awarded the Edyth May Sliffe Award for distinguished mathematics teaching. The annual award is presented to middle and high school teachers to recognize their outstanding work in motivating students in mathematics. To be eligible, teachers must participate in one of the Mathematical Association of America’s American Mathematics Competitions. This year, fewer than 35 teachers nationwide received this award. Nominated by students, parents and colleagues, each winner is awarded $500.

Locals donate backpacks to students in need

Conway Lakes Rehabilitation Center did its part to give back to the children of the greater Orlando and surrounding communities this month. By hosting a two-day event, the center was able to donate backpacks to the youth in the local area. It was the seventh year of the event, with more than 3,500 backpacks donated to date. At Conway Lakes Rehab Center, patients were able to participate by stuffing bags full with a variety of items. The first day of the event, Killarney Baptist Church and their school along with Conway Lake employees, patients and residents donated time, resources and energy to bring necessary supplies to underserved children.

Winter Park native Jacob Wise graduates from Ithaca College

Jacob Wise recently graduated from Ithaca College's School of Communications with a degree in Documentary Studies and Production. Winter Parker named to the president's list

Davenport University recently announced that Anuja Sabharwal of Winter Park has been named to the president's list for the winter 2016 semester. The president's list recognizes top students who excel with outstanding academic performance. To achieve recognition, a student must maintain a minimum 3.8 grade point average while enrolled in at least nine credits of regular coursework.

Local students named to Bucknell dean’s list

Bucknell University has released the dean's list for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2015-16 academic year. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean's list recognition. Local dean's list students are Beatrice Giordano of Winter Park, Maria Prothero of Winter Park, and Grant Reynolds of Maitland. Bucknell University is a highly selective private liberal arts university located in Lewisburg, Pa.

High schoolers earn $2,000 scholarships

Winter Park Kappa Foundation Inc. has awarded $10,000 in scholarships to five area high school seniors for academic achievement and service to their school and community. The recipients are: Dylan Adlam from Apopka High School, who will attend Rollins College; Stevenson Bassey from Jones High School, who will attend University of Florida; Caleb Dawkins from Lake Howell High School, who will attend Florida State University; Jalen Muñoz from Freedom High School, who will attend Florida A&M University; and Brandhon Sweeney from Winter Park High School, who will attend University of Florida.
