African Violet Society presents judged show

MARCH 1

The Central Florida African Violet Society presents its annual judged show and sale at the Beardall Senior Center, located at 800 Delaney Ave. in Orlando, on Friday, March 1, from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a fun, family event, which will include a display of African violets and Gesneriads. There will be a raffle and growing information at the event, as well as a large room of African violets and Gesneriads for sale. Admission is free. Call 407-246-2637 for more information.

MARCH 2

The sixth annual Junior League of Greater Orlando’s Kids in the Kitchen Fit-n-Fun Fest will take place Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Central Park in Winter Park. The free event will feature more than 40 exhibitors, free giveaways, music, games, an obstacle course, bounce houses, face painting, healthy snack suggestions and much more. The Orlando Science Center will partner with National Geographic Cinema Ventures Saturday, March 2, to re-brand their newly-renovated Digital Adventure Theater as the “Digital Adventure Theater, Presented by National Geographic.” The partnership will launch with the premiere of “Meerkats 3D.” With this branding partnership, the Science Center will gain special access to one of the world’s largest giant-screen film libraries that includes award-winning films in 2D and 3D digital formats. MARCH 3

On Sunday, March 3, Elaine Person teaches poetry from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Maitland Public Library, located at 501 S. Maitland Ave.

The city of Winter Park and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee present the 34th annual Winter Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. in downtown Winter Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring family and friends, and to wear green to the event. Parts of Park Avenue will be closed for much of the day, so park accordingly. MARCH 9

The sixth Annual Doggie Derby will bring the community together to celebrate man’s best friend, while helping kids and families, on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Corrine Commons in Baldwin Park, located at 1913 Meeting Place. Canines compete with dogs of similar sizes in a single-elimination, 25-yard sprint race. Champions are declared and trophies and prizes are awarded in each of the four weight divisions. The overall winner receives the grand prize. A $15 fee will allow interested individuals to register a dog online at doggiederby.com

ONGOING

The Maitland Public Library has brought back LEGOS Engineers, which will be from 4 to 5 p.m. every Monday from March 4 through Aug. 5. There will be first level and second level classes for grades 3 and higher.
