June 6 – A free doughnut is a sweet deal

Whether it’s powdered, filled or glazed, Krispy Kreme is offering a free doughnut in honor of National Doughnut Day this Friday, June 6. A “holiday” originally established in 1938 by the Salvation Army to raise funds for people in need, on this Friday, Krispy Kreme is offering one free doughnut of any variety at Krispy Kreme locations, including 1031 S. June 6 – New exhibits recognize 70th anniversary of D-Day

Beginning June 6, Art & History Museums – Maitland will devote its museums to exhibits related to war and conflict in a manner unique to each museum’s mission. Highlights include: “Battlefield” (at Maitland Art Center); “Veterans Remembered” (at Maitland History Museum); “Signal Corps Phones” (at Telephone Museum); and “Waterhouse at War” (at Waterhouse Residence Museum). June 6 – Carlos Oviedo opens at Jai Gallery

The beautiful Jai Gallery at 47 E. Robinson St. in downtown Orlando invites us to a sophisticated evening in celebration of Carlos Oviedo's “Icons”’ a solo exhibit of 13 of his oil paintings on June 6, beginning at 7 p.m. Carlos Oviedo is a celebrated Mexican painter who works in the realist manner. His exhibit “Icons” shows off his remarkable technique while allowing famous faces to look back at us through layers of luxurious color. The opening is free, and the public is invited. June 6 to 15 – Valencia College Theater presents a dark comedy

Martin McDonagh's darkly hilarious Irish comedy (is there any other kind?) “The Cripple of Inishmaan” finds a Hollywood director on a remote Irish island to cast his latest film. The locals scheme and clamor for their once-in-a-lifetime chance at movie stardom, but it’s frail young Billy who has the biggest Hollywood dream to fulfill. June 6 to July 6 – ‘Hair’ at the Mad Cow Theatre

The tradition-breaking musical from the ’60s, “Hair” changed the face – and other body parts – of Broadway. With music as exuberant and timely as when it first opened, “Hair” is about a group of young Americans searching for peace and love at the time of the Vietnam War. Featuring the songs – “Aquarius,” “Let the Sun Shine in,” and “Good Morning Starshine,” its relevance is undeniable. Performances run June 6 to July 6 at the Mad Cow Theatre in Orlando. June 7 – Live from Orlando, its Science Night Live!

Grown-ups get to take over the Orlando Science Center when it’s reserved strictly for adults at Science Night Live on June 7 beginning at 8 p.m. Adult-inspired programming includes a concert by the band TWITCHY, led by Florida Institute of Technology President Anthony Catanese and NASA astronaut and U.S. Navy captain Winston Scott; a laser light show in the CineDome; viewing planets in the Observatory; and conducting experiments in Dr. Dare’s Laboratory. June 7 – Berkshire Choral Festival in Winter Park debut

Choral works by two giants of opera – the “Stabat Mater” by Rossini and the “Messa di Gloria” by Puccini – will be performed by the Berkshire Choral Festival under the baton of Dr. John Sinclair. The Bach Festival Orchestra will accompany the 100-voice Festival Chorus beginning at 7:30 p.m. on June 7. The concert will be held in the Knowles Chapel on the campus of Rollins College. June 8 – The Waterhouse Ghost

In a free, live event, William H. Waterhouse, who built his family home in Maitland in 1884, “comes to life” to tell his story – from surviving the horrors of a Confederate prison, to his journey to Florida to become a renowned citizen in Maitland. Mr. Waterhouse comes back to share his story, including his 36 years as a city councilman, helping create the city of Maitland. The Waterhouse Ghost takes place June 8 at 12:30 p.m. at 231 W. June 8 – The Tony Awards on TV

The Tony Awards, honoring theatre professionals for achievement on Broadway, gives the world a look at musical performances from the newest shows on Broadway and those moments that can only happen live with celebrity presenters. June 9 to 14 – World Ballet Competition with All Stars of Dance Gala

The World Ballet Competition – founded here in Central Florida – is held in Orlando each June. The Competition brings together an impressive array of international talent, all of which comes together on June 14 at 7:30 p.m. for a not-to-be-missed All Stars of Dance Gala. Held at the Bob Carr PAC, the audience is treated to brilliant performances from visiting dance stars who share the spotlight with medal-winners from the weeklong competition. June 10 to Aug. 8 – Summer Tours: American Frames and Paintings

As part of a series of ‘Summer Tours’ at the Orlando Museum of Art, we’ll see how frames make a difference in the way in which we see a work of art. The tour – American Frames and Paintings – will be offered Tuesdays to Fridays at the Museum. June 10 – Snake Awareness Presentation at Central Florida Zoo

Designed for everyone from homeowners to police officers, the Central Florida Zoo's Reptile Department offers Snake Awareness to help people identify venomous and non-venomous snakes. Dude, if you’re jonesin’ for that magical time when MTV actually showed the videos created by your favorite rock artists, each Wednesday night you can get your dose of MTV as The Abbey plays those totally tubular videos you know and love from the awesome ’80s. June 13, 14 and 15 – Tim Mooney’s ‘Shakespeare's Histories’

Following sell-out performances at Orlando Fringe, Tim Mooney presents all 10 of Shakespeare’s histories in one epic, one-man performance, capturing the history of England from 1066 to 1533 in just one hour. Including the most brilliant speeches of Shakespeare’s plays, “Shakespeare’s Histories” reveals the genius of Shakespeare’s historical vision. “Histories” will be performed at Breakthrough Theatre on June 13 and 14 at 7 p.m., and June 15 at 3 p.m. Breakthrough Theatre is at 419A W.
