OCOEE Through nine games a year ago, in the program’s first season of competition, the Legacy Charter girls basketball team had amassed a record of 2-7.

While that mark wasn’t too bad considering the program had been started from scratch or that most of its players hadn’t had much experience with organized basketball prior, the Eagles have — nonetheless — completely flipped the script through nine games this season.

Sophomore Tya Freeman is the Eagles' leading scorer and posted a career-best 36 points against Foundation Academy.

After a loss to Orlando Christian Prep Dec. 15, Legacy Charter stood at 7-2 through nine games.

“I think a year into it, they’re starting to get a feel for the game and the basketball I.Q. is a little better,” said second-year head coach Blessing Freeman. “I think just that year of basketball has helped them develop.”

The Eagles opened the season with a 32-30 over Kissimmee’s Liberty High, a public school, and have enjoyed victories over rivals such as Foundation Academy, Windermere Prep and Mount Dora Christian Academy.

Leading the way has been sophomore Tya Freeman (no relation to Blessing Freeman). Freeman scored a season-high 36 points in a win over Foundation Academy and has taken a big step forward this season, as her coach tells it.

“(Tya’s) three-point shot, from last year to this year, has gotten 10-times better,” Freeman said. “It was a little flat last year, this year she’s got more arch on it.”

The Eagles will return to action in the new year with games against Seven Rivers Christian (Jan. 5), Faith Christian (Jan. 10) and Foundation Academy (Jan. 12).
