On Monday, April 14, Councilwoman-Elect Bev Reponen and Councilman John P. Lowndes will be sworn into office.

The Inaugural Ceremony will take place on Monday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the Maitland City Hall Council Chambers. The general public is invited to attend this event.

Leisure Services programs

Springtime is always an exciting time in the Leisure Services Department and our park system. Leisure Services is currently taking reservations for our youth tennis summer program slated for June, July and August. On May 10 we are also introducing a Starter Tournament for ages 10, 12 and 14, for more information about these programs please visit the city website or call 407-539-0042.

New this season, we have introduced a middle school and high school open gym program on Thursday evenings from April 10 through May 29. In addition, we are hosting month-long basketball fundamentals clinics for second through sixth graders on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays at 9 a.m. The clinics will begin in April and continue through August. Adult Tennis Program Sessions begin this week and run through May 18 with play and instruction available at beginner through intermediate levels. We are also offering doubles strategy, cardio tennis and a men’s adult clinics through August.

Our Community Park class schedule includes two S.A.F.E. classes at Maitland Community Park on April 16 and May 21. This course is open to all women interested in learning about self-defense. In addition we are offering “Peppers – Some Like It Hot,” a gardening class, on May 21. For either of these courses, call 407-539-0042.

For those of you who enjoy walking, and for others as well, please check out our newly installed walking paths at Minnehaha Park and Lake Lily Park. You will find an information sign explaining walking distances at those properties and 1/10th mile markers have been placed along the paths to help you build a walking program designed just for you. Installed as a part of Maitland Walks, these paths will complement a 2-mile course in Maitland Center. Thanks to Healthy Maitland, Winter Park Health Foundation and Florida Hospital for their support in making these paths a reality.

Join us for the city of Maitland’s Farmers Market on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lake Lily Park. Please note the market will be closed on April 13 for the Maitland Chamber of Commerce’s Spring Festival of the Arts, and April 20 for Easter. The market will reopen on April 27.

Mark your calendars for the next Movie in the Park on May 3. We are pleased to announce that by special arrangement, Leisure Services will be showing the sing-along version of Disney’s “Frozen” at 8 p.m. in Quinn Strong Park. This special version of the Disney smash hit features on-screen lyrics with a magical bouncing snowflake to follow along. Bring the entire family to this special film event in Maitland. Get there early and remember – you bring the chair, we will show you the stars!

Reminder

Join us on Friday, April 11 at 2 p.m. for the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony of Maitland’s SunRail station. The program will include prepared remarks from U.S. Rep. John Mica (FL-7) and Florida Department of Transportation’s Frank O’Dea. Following the program, attendees will be able tour of the SunRail train, station and ticket kiosks. The address is 801 N.
