Maitland City Talk

The city of Maitland will host a General Municipal Election on Tuesday, March 11, to fill Council Seat 2. The person elected will serve a three-year term. At the close of the qualifying period two candidates qualified for City Council Seat 2: Martha Bryant-Hall and Beverly J. Reponen. One candidate qualified for City Council Seat 4: John P. Lowndes. Per the City Charter, Mr. Lowndes, being unopposed, is declared elected without being voted upon in the General Municipal Election. Therefore, only one Council race will appear on the ballot.

In addition to the election for Seat 2, the ballot contains one City Charter amendment question to voters. On Nov. 11, 2013, the Maitland City Council adopted Ordinance No. 1249 to amend the City Charter and adopt ballot language banning billboards and digital outdoor advertising in the city of Maitland. The adopted Charter Amendment (question) will appear on the March 11 ballot as follows:

“Shall the Maitland Charter be amended to include a prohibition on signs or groupings of signs in excess of thirty-two square feet in total sign area that publicize activities, ideas, products or services that are not conducted, associated or available on the premises on which the sign or signs are located when such signs are to be erected for a period in excess of thirty consecutive days?

YES FOR APPROVAL

NO FOR REJECTION?”

If approved, this Charter Amendment will prohibit posting signs exceeding 32 square feet in sign area that advertise activities, ideas, products or services at a location other than where the sign is posted. This prohibition will only apply to signs erected for a period exceeding 30 consecutive days. In addition, this charter amendment will not prohibit the posting of off-site public safety signs. The polling places for the upcoming municipal election will be the Maitland City Hall, 1776 Independence Lane, and the First Baptist Church of Maitland, 1950 Mohican Trial.
