Saturday, Feb. 2, the fourth Honor the Badge Ceremony was held at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Maitland. The event was conducted at the lakeside worship site under perfect skies and beautiful weather.

The event was organized by the fire and police department chaplains to honor the first responders in the community. Local police and fire departments were invited as well.

The ceremony opened with an invocation by pastor Scott Harris, and then the FD and PD honor guards posted the colors. A member of the Orlando Fire Department Pipes and Drums Corps, Lt. Mike Stallings, played the bagpipes.

This opening was followed by several patriotic songs performed by Chris Kovic from Asbury United Methodist.

Maitland’s Fire Chief Kim Neisler spoke about the chaplain program and then there was a special presentation of a collectable challenge coin printed with the Lord’s Prayer made to the chaplains.

As members of the Honor Guard folded the ceremonial flag, Pastor Brian Pikalow read aloud the names of the fallen firefighters and police officers from Florida in 2012. The flag was then presented to the Honorable Mayor Howard Schieferdecker. This flag will be presented to the family of one of those fallen heroes.

Visiting pastors Todd Lamphere from First Baptist Church in Altamonte Springs and Andy Searles from Aloma Methodist Church provided insight about what first responders mean to them.

The ceremony was followed by a cookout, and fun and games were in place for the attendees and their families to enjoy as well.

This was a great day of camaraderie for all.
