Dear friends and neighbors,

You’re invited to meet the local people who have dedicated their lives to saving yours: our Maitland firefighters and police officers.

A benefit kickball tournament will be held on Sunday, May 1 starting at noon (registration begins at 11:30 a.m.). The tournament is at the Keller Road Baseball Fields, just south of RDV on Keller Road. These brave men and women want to meet your families for a fun-filled day of sports, music, food and friendship.

The tournament is the third annual fundraiser sponsored by the Maitland Friends of First Response, a non-profit community organization founded in 2008 by local citizens to provide support and assistance to the men and women who keep our community safe and protected. All proceeds and funds go directly to help the first responders who serve our community.

It’s easy to think of first responders as heroes… and they are. But they are also people with families, friends and neighbors. They are people who want to help build and maintain our community. You can meet them personally and casually when they’re out of uniform, relaxed and trying to kick the same bouncing ball as everyone else.

Anyone can join in the tournament. It will be a day of friendly competition, amusing kickball moments and a positive way to build our community.

To honor the men and women who serve our community, the events will begin with the Central Florida Boy Scouts Color Guard presenting the flag of the United States, followed by a solo performance of our “National Anthem”.

There will be a fire truck and police cruiser on hand for the kids (and adults) to explore, hot dogs and hamburgers will be available (provided by the Maitland Men’s Club), and there will be a raffle and silent auction for great prizes.

The top kickball team will receive the prestigious kickball trophy proudly held by our Maitland firefighters for the past two years. The raffle winner will receive two tickets on AirTran to any of their destinations in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. Those who participate in the silent auction can bid on such items as a two-day stay at the Omni Championship Golf Resort, passes to Disney or Gatorland, local restaurant specials and more.

The Maitland Friends of First Response is joining with other organizations to show our support for those who are willing to put their lives on the line every day. Your family has an opportunity to meet these dedicated people and show them how much they’re truly appreciated.

Come out on Sunday, May 1 to have a good time with your family and meet new friends. Support those who are dedicated to serving and protecting you.

City Council meeting

The Maitland City Council met on April 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Below is a synopsis of that meeting. The next regular scheduled Council meeting will be held on Monday, May 9. For updates, please check our website www.itsmymaitland.com

Inauguration ceremony

Mayor Schieferdecker recognized former Mayor Robert Breaux for his service to the city.

Vice Mayor Linda Frosch, Councilman Phil Bonus, and Councilman Ivan Valdes were sworn into office.

Public Hearings:

Adopted on second reading an ordinance amending Maitland City Code, Chapter 2, Division 4, Section 2-123 (4) relating to the City of Maitland Municipal Police Officers and Firefighters Pension Trust Fund. Adoption of this ordinance removed “special duty detail pay” as pensionable salary for Police Officers and Firefighters.

Consent Agenda:

• The Council minutes of the April 11, 2011 were approved as presented and are now available on the city web page.

• Received the Parks & Recreation Advisory board Minutes of January 5, 2011 and February 2, 2011

• Approved the Facility Use Agreement with the Maitland Art & History Association for the use of the Garden Club building at Lake Lily Park
