Maitland earns Green Local Government designation

The city of Maitland is pleased to announce that the Florida Green Building Coalition has confirmed that the city has earned the Green Local Government designation at the silver certification level.

This represents an extensive effort by the city to create, document and employ “green” and sustainable environmental practices throughout the city. These practices encompass a wide range of activities, which lead to reduced energy and utility use, reduced waste and effective use of our natural resources.

Currently there are only 15 cities in Florida that have achieved certification as a green local government.

Maitland Summit III achieves gold status

In August of this year, Liberty Property Trust announced that it has earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its 211,000-square-foot Maitland Summit III office building in Orlando.

“LEED-certified buildings are attractive to occupants because they offer lower operating costs and provide a more productive work environment,” said Stephen Whitley, senior vice president and manager for Liberty.

“Maitland Summit III is descriptive of the 21st century technologically advanced office building,” said Steve Belflower, AIA, architect and principal with HuntonBrady Architects.

Maitland was actively involved by working with Liberty, the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission and Orange County in working with the developer and the tenant, Fidelity Information Services, to bring this green building to reality.

Maitland police station achieves gold rating

Keeping in line with Maitland being a ‘Green City’, the Edward Doyle Police Building has achieved sufficient points for the USGBC’s LEED gold certification.

The building achieved its designation through careful design and construction techniques that includes careful building placement, efficient fixtures and irrigation systems, high performance window systems, high efficiency HVAC systems, among many others.

Maitland is proud of the delivery and LEED certification of our new police headquarters and expects similar success with future buildings.

Maitland Fire Station No. 45 and city hall to be built to LEED standards

On Aug. 23, the Maitland City Council approved the construction of the new Maitland Fire Station No. 45 to be built in the same location as the existing fire station on Packwood Avenue, just east of Maitland Avenue.

The new building will contain about 15,500 square feet of interior space and will be LEED certified by the USGBC.

The exterior design will be compatible with the criteria established for downtown Maitland and include the salvaging of bricks from the current site so they can be reused for pavers in walkways and driveway aprons.

It is expected that a groundbreaking on the new facility will take place prior to the end of the calendar year with an anticipated completion date of December 2011, at which point the Maitland Fire Department will proudly move into its new facility.

The city has also approved the design for a new city hall to be located immediately adjacent to the new fire station. In line with the city’s commitment to ‘Going Green’, it is expected the new city hall will achieve LEED designation as well. Anticipated groundbreaking will be late in the first quarter 2011.
