City Council welcomes Mike Thomas

On Monday night, an inaugural celebration was held to welcome new City Councilman Mike Thomas and returning Councilwoman Joy Goff-Marcil and to bid a fond farewell to Ivan Valdes. A brief ceremony included the presentation of colors, the administration of oath of office, and the signing of the honorable character oath. The event capped off with guests enjoying cake, lemonade, and water.

At around 7:15 p.m., the City Council reconvened for a public hearing:

• Ordinance – Revising Chapter 21, Zoning (21-19b, 21-22) Chapter 23-2, and Chapter 7.5, Article VII (DMZD)

The consent agenda was approved as presented:

• Approval of the City Council Meeting Minutes of March 28, 2016

• 2016 Municipal Election Results

• Maitland Community Park Tennis Court Reconstruction Bid Award

• Award Banking Services Contract to Seacoast Bank

• Receipt of the 2015 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR)

• Acceptance of Easements for Maitland Station

Decisions items included:

• Appointments – (a) Vice Mayor; (b) Alternate Member on MetroPlan Orlando Municipal Advisory Committee. Councilwoman Bev Reponen was appointed Vice Mayor and Mr. Thomas was selected as the alternate member of the MetroPlan Orlando Municipal Advisory Committee.

• Preliminary Resolution Removing James S. Williams as city manager. The Council approved the preliminary resolution.

Celebrate Earth Day Birthday on April 22

The city of Maitland's Utility Billing Department is hosting a free family friendly event with games, activities, giveaways, and free snacks. The Earth Day Birthday Celebration will take place on Friday, April 22, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Maitland Community Park at 1400 Mayo Ave.

Elementary students will have the opportunity to participate in a coloring contest. All submissions will be placed on the city's Facebook page for voting. There are six categories and each category will have its own Facebook album: pre k-kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade. "Like" any photo to cast votes. The submission with the most "likes" will win first place for each grade level and a prize.
