Maitland Fire Rescue Department receives Life Safety Achievement Award

The Maitland Fire Rescue Department was recently presented with a Life Safety Achievement Award for its fire prevention accomplishments conducted in 2015 by the National Association of State Fire Marshals Fire Research and Education Foundation (NASFM Foundation) and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. The award was announced by Butch Browning, president of the NASFM Fire Research and Education Foundation.

“The Life Safety Achievement Award recognizes the hard work of the men and women of the Maitland Fire Rescue Department in their efforts to educate the community,” said Maitland Fire Rescue Department Chief Kimberly Neisler. “They empower Maitland residents, commuters, and visitors with knowledge they can apply to prevent fires.”

Since 1994, the Life Safety Achievement Award has recognized local fire prevention efforts that have contributed to reducing the number of lives lost in residential fires. The Maitland Fire Rescue Department is one of 96 fire departments across the United States to receive the award this year for recording zero fire deaths in 2014 or for reducing fire deaths by at least 10 percent during the year. In addition, award recipients documented active and effective fire prevention programs as well as a clear commitment to reducing the number of house fires in the community.

City to begin road-resurfacing project

The city of Maitland Public Works Department has begun a road-resurfacing project to mill and repave select roads throughout the city.

The annual program is designed to prioritize and provide treatment of streets with the lowest Pavement Condition Rating (PCR) as determined by city staff.

The contractor, the Middlesex Corporation, will provide notices to residents, place variable message boards, and execute a maintenance-of-traffic plan.

Throughout the process, lane closures are expected. Road closures are not anticipated at this time; however, if road closures become necessary, a detour will be set up with appropriate signage.

The following roads will be resurfaced:

1) Minnehaha Circle (Kyle Drive to Cul-de-Sac) on Oct. 21

2) Maitland Center Parkway from Oct. 21 to 24

3) Palmetto and Banard Court on Oct. 22

4) Maitland Summit Boulevard (from Bobtail Drive to Pembrook Drive) on Oct. 23

5) Thunderbird Trail (from Thistle Lane to Mohican Trail) on Oct. 27 to 29

6) Kewannee Trail (from Tuscarora Trail to city limit) on Oct. 27 to 29

Schedule is subject to change. Preventive maintenance activities, such as milling and repaving roads, prolong the life of the pavement structure.
