Pembrook Drive permanent closure starts on Aug. 31

Last week, FDOT advised that they are planning to close a section of Pembrook Drive at the intersection with Keller Road on Aug. 31. It's a permanent closure. The road will become a cul-de-sac with a stormwater retention pond. FDOT plans to extend Southhall Lane so it will connect with Keller Road. The anticipated completion date is fall 2015. The Public Works Department published a bid advertisement for the project in May and received bids from potential contractors in early June. The contract was awarded earlier this summer. Construction of the commuter rail entryway is anticipated to begin in the late summer.

City receives Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

The Government Finance Officers Association of the U.S. and Canada recognized the city of Maitland for its Fiscal Year 2015 budget. The budget was assessed for its role as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device. The FY 2015 received "proficient" ratings in these four categories and the 14 mandatory criteria within these four categories. The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award "reflects the commitment of the [municipality] to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting," says the GFOA in a press release.

Art-in-Transit installation at Maitland SunRail Station

In late 2014, the city of Maitland, in partnership with the Art & History Museums-Maitland, solicited proposals for artwork at the Maitland SunRail Station. The art selection committee chose the submittal of Central Florida artist and Maitland resident KYLE. KYLE’s artwork, called FOCUS, features an aluminum panel with carve-outs representing Mayan, Aztec and Deco elements. The U.S. Department of Transportation provided funding for the project from its Art-in-Transit grant program. “I wish to capture [a] sense of passage, like a gate or doorway,” KYLE said of his art.
