The hiring of Cameron Duke during the offseason injected some optimism and excitement into the football program at Edgewater High.

It was needed after a winless season that included a scandal with former coach Chris Leak.

But excitement over a new coach can only go so far. Fortunately, the Edgewater Eagles have created some heightened excitement with their play on the field so far. Edgewater is 2-1, with consecutive wins against Colonial and Olympia and, as a result, the Eagles are our first Observer Preps team of the week of the fall.

After performing better than expected against Bishop Moore in a 44-26 Week One loss, the Eagles bounced back and trounced Colonial 28-0 and then scored an upset-victory against Olympia, 45-36.

After averaging around nine points per game in 2016, Edgewater is averaging 33 points per game through three games this fall. Quondarrius Whitfield scored three touchdowns for the Eagles against Colonial and sophomore Isaiah Connelly rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the win against Olympia.

The Eagles return to action Sept. 29 against district rival West Port.

The Observer Preps Team of the Week feature is presented by State Farm Insurance Agent Jo Barsh.
