OCT. 9

Crescent Fitness is hosting a free nutrition class for seniors. Topics will include nutrition and food preparation for health. Classes will be taught Tuesdays, Oct. 9 through Nov. 13, at 300 E. State Road 434 in Winter Springs. To register, call 407-322-2099.

OCT. 10

A new EASE (Early Alzheimer Support & Education) class will be held every Wednesday in October from 10 a.m. to noon at Holy Family Catholic Church. To register, call 1-800-272-3900. Attendees must be prescreened and be able to commit to the 2-hour weekly class.

The 2012 Osceola County Walk to End Alzheimer’s is 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13. The event’s proceeds will benefit the Central and North Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando, recently launched its 2012 Dining Around Town. Dining Around Town is a unique fundraising initiative that grants entrants the chance of winning $100 gift cards to 13 upscale Central Florida restaurants. The Central Florida Aging in Place Chapter will present “Homes for Lifetime Living: Outcomes Through Teamwork” on Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Metro Orlando Home Builders Association in Maitland. This is one-day seminar will educate professionals on aging in place and on collaborating with multi-disciplines to ensure that Central Florida is a community that supports healthy aging. First Annual Senior’s Day out will include variety shows featuring poetry, music, dance, comedy, storytelling, skits, readings, arts and craft display and more, all done by seniors. It will be on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pine Hills Community Performing Arts Center. For more information call 407-285-7372.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, the Maitland Senior Center will host its first annual health fair from noon to 3 p.m. Check out new trends and speak with: health care professionals, housing specialists, area service providers, Medicare advantage plan providers, home care providers and hearing specialists. The event is free, with free health and hearing screenings. The Maitland Fire Department will also be offering flu shots.

Free bagel breakfast, live entertainment, give-aways and prizes will be enjoyed at the Jewish Pavilion’s Party in the Park on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 9:30 a.m. at the Plaza at Crane’s Roost Park in Altamonte Springs. The festivities will include activities for children such as face painting and clowns, a health fair, flu shots, 100 vendors, a walk around the park, T-shirt sales and more. Alzheimer’s CARE Training Workshops will be held from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7 and Dec. 5 at The Tremont, located at 7015 Red Bug Lake Road in Oviedo. The workshop will teach caregivers and other family members how to manage behaviors, encourage engagement and care for themselves while caring for their loved one. The Senior Speakers Series is the first and third Tuesday of every month at 1 p.m. Each month we will cover a broad range of topics that everyone will enjoy. Come join us for an educational and fun time. On Oct. 16 come learn more about how you might benefit from the free consultations, seminars and information available at One Senior Place, which is a comprehensive one-stop resource with access to information, advice, care and services for seniors. Refreshments will be served.

The Maitland Senior Center presents a program for elders on the second Friday of the month that is staffed by counselors from S.H.I.N.E. (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders). The program provides free unbiased counseling about Medicare, Medigap, HMOs, Medicaid, prescriptions drug plans and long-term care. Visit FloridaSHINE.org
