The Wildcats scored first, and then second, but they couldn’t stop an Edgewater comeback that would define a shocker 20-9 upset on Sept. 9.

Winter Park (1-1) entered Edgewater’s (1-1) football stadium the heavy favorite to win their second straight game to start the season, but instead found themselves on the losing end of a reversal of fortune.

A stalled offense and confused defense led to a scoreless second half for the Wildcats while the Eagles managed to score on three sides of the ball.

Both of the Wildcats’ scores came early, as a field goal and an Asiantii Woulard touchdown propelled them to a 9-0 lead. Meanwhile the Wildcats’ defense held the Eagles to a shutout in the first quarter.

But in a bizarre twist the Eagles, who only managed 141 total yards in the entire game, found the end zone three times in the ensuing three quarters to catch the Wildcats and then run away with the win.

Defense and special teams would make the biggest plays of the game for the Eagles. Deion Green started the comeback with a 58-yard interception return. Then Rashid Bradley picked up a dropped punt return just a few steps in front of the end zone.

Only in the fourth quarter did the Eagles manage to pick up a touchdown on offense.

Through the air, Eagles quarterback J.B. Woodman connected with as many Wildcat defenders as he did with his own receivers, but the Eagles’ John Altman pounded Winter Park’s defense on the ground, picking up 128 yards on his own.

Altman’s fleet feet would carry the ball downfield 33 times in the game, with the rest of the team combining to carry the ball only eight more times. A three-yard run would be Altman’s only trip into the end zone.

With one of their two biggest rivals leaving them with a loss, the Wildcats will look to regroup this week against Boone. They’ll return home for that game, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

At the start of the season, standout receiver D’vario Montgomery said he expects a fight from Boone.

“It’ll be a big game for us,” he said.
