Wildcats streaking in district

The Wildcats are back on a winning streak after trouncing Freedom 86-61 on Jan. 7, giving them their third win in a row.

For Winter Park’s boys basketball team (13-4, 6-0), a season stacked with nationally ranked opponents had not been kind, especially on the road. In the last two weeks of December, they had lost three straight games against top teams.

Now in the thick of district play closer to home, the Wildcats have recovered nicely, with an 82-53 win over Oak Ridge Jan. 3, a 78-49 trouncing of rival Edgewater Jan. 5, and their recent win over Freedom.

Austin Rivers continues to lead the team in scoring, shooting 29.3 points per game — nearly half of what his team has averaged this season at 76.4 points per game. He’s averaged more than 55 percent shooting so far.

Even with his focus on offense, Rivers has led the team in defensive rebounds by a wide margin, picking up 4.6 defensive boards per game.

Billydee Williams has held reign over the basket, blocking 19 shots this season and picking up six rebounds per game.

Meanwhile Brett Comer has emerged as the team’s key transition player, picking up 5.9 assists per game while grabbing 2.6 steals per game, leading the team in both categories.

Austin Keel has been an all-around asset to the Wildcats, averaging 12.1 points, 1.4 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game.

The team continued its district play with a home showdown against Timber Creek at press time Tuesday, and will face University in Cougar country at 7:30 p.m. Thursday Jan. 13.
