“Stop tailgating before it stops YOU” campaign

Nationally, rear-end collisions are the most frequently occurring type of crash, accounting for approximately 29 percent of all crashes and resulting in a substantial number of injuries, fatalities and property damage each year.

Unfortunately, Central Florida is not exempt from this trend. Recent traffic crash data indicates that locally rear-end collisions are the leading type of crash, representing more than 33 percent of all reported traffic collisions. During 2013, in the city of Winter Park alone, rear-end collisions caused more than $3 million in property damage and injury insurance claims.

As shown by these collisions and studies conducted by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one of the primary contributing factors in rear-end collisions are drivers following vehicles at an unsafe distance, thereby not allowing sufficient time to decelerate in the event the vehicle they are following slows.

In order to better address this issue the Winter Park Police Department, along with community and business partners, will be commencing the “Stop tailgating before it stops YOU” campaign. The goal of this campaign is to reduce the number of rear-end collisions by means of educating drivers regarding safe driving practices and focusing targeted enforcement of violators at locations where collisions most frequently occur.

For this reason, for the entire month of June, motorists can expect the Winter Park Police Department to actively seek out drivers engaging in the dangerous act of tailgating.

Splash into summer catching rays by the pool! Watch Woody & Buzz in Central Park

On Thursday, June 12, at 8 p.m., join us for Popcorn Flicks in the Park featuring a childhood favorite “Toy Story.” Popcorn Flicks, a popular film series that features classic films for the whole family, is presented by Winter Park Community Redevelopment Agency and produced by Enzian Theater. Moviegoers can bring blanket and a picnic or snacks to downtown Central Park while enjoying a great movie in the park with family and friends. Plus, there is free popcorn for everyone!
