“Feed the Need” Kickoff

On Thursday, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m., just outside Winter Park City Hall located at 401 S. Park Ave., the Winter Park community is kicking off the first of its kind, community-wide effort to end hunger in Central Florida, “Feed the Need.” The city of Winter Park, Rollins College, Sodexo, Think Creative Inc., and Winter Park Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to create Feed the Need, a powerful fundraising engine, purely developed to raise money to help Second Harvest Food Bank provide more food for families in need.

Feed the Need’s presenting sponsors: Mayflower Retirement Community; Winter Park Memorial Hospital, a Florida Hospital; and Florida Distributing Company, will be kicking off the campaign with an impressive check presentation setting the pace for the Feed the Need effort. From Friday, Nov. 1, through Friday, Nov. 22, the campaign will unite local residents, businesses, faith communities and civic groups through online giving, friendly competitions, community events and individual fundraising efforts, with one mission in mind: to “Feed the Need.”

Approximately 1 in 5 of our Central Florida population — 732,000 people — needed food assistance last year. This is a 152 percent increase from 2006. In this same area, 172,590 children struggle with hunger. When these kids have no food, we have no choice but to respond.

“This is a tremendous effort that addresses a serious need in our community. For every $1 donated, up to $9 worth of grocery products is provided for those in need. In fact, 96 percent of every dollar goes straight to feeding people,” explained Mayor Ken Bradley. “I commend the partners and sponsors in joining forces to help end hunger in Winter Park and Central Florida. I will be supporting them through this worthy endeavor.”

Winter Park veterans – save the date

On Friday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m. the city of Winter Park will be presenting its third annual Veterans Day Celebration. This event will be held in honor of all of the veterans of Winter Park at the Winter Park Community Center Ruby Ball Amphitheater located at 721 W. New England Ave.

We are calling all veterans that have served in any military campaign (World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom or Afghanistan) or have served in any military branch in honor of our nation’s freedom. The city is holding this event to pay tribute to your dedicated service to our country. For more information regarding the city’s third annual Veterans Day Celebration, please call 407-599-3428.

Park Avenue closed to through traffic

Due to inclement weather, the Winter Park High School Annual Parade and Pep Rally that was originally scheduled for Sept. 25 has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 30, beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Park Avenue will be closed to through traffic along the parade route from Webster Avenue to Lyman Avenue from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Side streets will also be closed at the Park Avenue intersections as the parade passes. In order to minimize disruption to traffic flow, street closures will occur in a rolling fashion and will reopen immediately after the parade has safely passed.

Please make note of these road closures prior to traveling around downtown Winter Park on Oct. 30. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and continued support of Winter Park High School. Go Wildcats!
