Aug. 26 City Commission meeting highlights

There was a City Commission meeting held Aug. 26 in City Hall Commission Chambers. Below are a few highlights of decisions made at the meeting:

Mayor’s Report

• A presentation was made by to Wanda Salerno as the recipient of the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award.

Consent Agenda

• The minutes of 8/12/13 were approved.

• The purchase order for Technical Solutions to perform work for the Capital Improvement Project - Alum Station Upgrades was approved.

• The budget adjustment to fund payments to Waste Pro and ADPI (third-party billing agent for ambulance transport services) through the remainder of the current fiscal year was approved.

• The annual review of the city’s Debt Management Policy was approved.

• The expenditure of Federal Forfeiture Funds for the purchase and installation of the AeroClave Hydra System and two portable units was approved.

Action Items Requiring Discussion

• As part of the budget discussion, $250,000 was approved to be included in the Fiscal Year 2014 proposed budget to address Category 1 Hazardous Tree Removal and Category 1 Tree Pruning.

Public hearings

• The police and fire pension ordinances were approved.

• The resolution designating 940 Old England Ave. as a historic resource in the Winter Park Register of Historic Places was approved.

• The first reading of the ordinance revising the permitted and conditional uses regulations for restaurants and other food service establishments; providing definitions for fine dining and other restaurants, was approved.

A full copy of the Aug. 26 City Commission minutes will be available at cityofwinterpark.org the week of Sept. 9, pending approval by the City Commission.

Labor Day holiday

City Hall will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2. This is also a Waste Pro holiday. If your household garbage, recycling or yard waste service falls on Labor Day, your items will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled pickup day.

Household hazardous waste disposal day

The city of Winter Park, in partnership with Waste Pro for household hazardous waste and A1 Assets Inc. for e-waste, will be offering waste disposal for all city residents Saturday, Aug. 31, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Compound located at 1409 Howell Branch Road, directly behind Fire Station 64.

The following items will be accepted:

• fertilizers and pesticides

• antifreeze

• propane tanks

• paint thinners

• wet latex paint (dry latex paint is not hazardous waste and can go in trash)

• oil based paint (can be wet or dry)

• non-alkaline batteries (regular alkaline batteries can go in trash)

• gasoline

• used engine oil

• pool chemicals

• household chemicals

• tires (maximum of four)

• used motor oil

• e-waste (computers, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, FAX machines, CD players and stereos)

Drugs and prescription medications

Please take to the city’s Prescription Reclamation Station in the lobby of the Public Safety Facility located at 500 N. Virginia Ave., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Here are some helpful tips for a quick & safe drop-off:

• Please bring your proof of city residency - driver’s license or utility bill statement.

• Keep all hazardous waste materials in their original containers with its original labeling. Unknown items will not be accepted.

• Items will only be accepted on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 8 a.m. to noon. Items delivered before or after this time will not be accepted.

• This drop off is for residential use only. No contractors please.
