Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

The Winter Park Police Department (WPPD) is supporting the National Highway Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown this coming Labor Day weekend in an effort to prevent the devastating deaths and injuries caused by alcohol- and drug- impaired driving. Over the Labor Day weekend in 2010, 147 people in the U.S. were killed as a result of drunk driving, representing 36 percent of all highway fatalities.

To prevent additional fatalities, beginning Friday, Aug. 16, through Monday, Sept. 2, the WPPD, along with other law enforcement agencies, will be conducting checkpoints and roving saturation patrols within Orange County looking for alcohol and drug impaired drivers. If you drive impaired, you will be arrested.

The WPPD recommends these simple tips for a safe Labor Day weekend:

• Plan a safe way home before the fun begins.

• Before drinking, designate a sober driver.

• If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.

• If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact the police.

• And remember, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” If you know someone who is about to drive or ride a motorcycle while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

Walking to school

As we welcome back our students to school, please remember to be cautious of back to school bike riders and walkers. Please teach your children basic street and traffic safety techniques, especially while travelling to and from school. We are all visual learners, so remember to be walking examples of what a safe pedestrian should do and be while crossing the road. Children watch us and mimic our actions, so as adults, please be safe role models for our little ones.
