Temple Drive closures to occur during Electric Undergrounding Project

This week, the city of Winter Park Electric Utility Department commenced a project that will underground the electric distribution feeder on Temple Drive between Palmer Avenue and Howell Brand Road. Periodic road closures will occur in this area throughout the duration of the project so that crews can safely work to underground the overhead electric lines and cables. The project is expected to be completed by February 2012.

In 2005, the city took ownership of the electric utility distribution system and made a commitment to its customers to improve the electric reliability and aesthetics of the system. Undergrounding increases reliability by reducing exposure to the elements that cause a majority of power outages.

To date, the city has undergrounded seven miles of overhead power lines. The Temple Drive project will underground more than one mile of power lines and benefit about 1,000 customers.

This project is just one component of the overall citywide undergrounding initiative and will be performed simultaneous to PLUG IN (Putting Lines Under Ground In Neighborhoods), the neighborhood undergrounding cost sharing program.

The city continually strives to minimize inconvenience to local residents and through traffic during construction. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this important project.

For more information regarding PLUG IN and the city’s undergrounding efforts, please contact the Electric Utility Department at 407-599-3400.
