THUNDERSTORM SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

The storm season is here and unfortunately, severe thunderstorms mean power outages. Now with the regular occurrence of heavy afternoon storms, the city would like to remind you of some important safety tips during this hurricane season:

Never touch downed power lines. Lines may be live and deadly. Dial 911 immediately to ensure that the line is turned off so repairs can be made.

Report power outages to 1-877-811-8700. When reporting an outage, if you receive a busy signal, it most likely means Winter Park electric is aware of the outage. Most outages affect numerous customers and the busy signal means we are receiving calls about your outage and are working to restore power as quickly as possible.

Fallen trees/large limbs. If you see a large tree or limb that has fallen, please call the city’s Forestry Division at 407-599-3325.

Protect your appliances. Sign up for the city’s Surge Protection Program and block powerful lightning strikes from entering your home through electrical, cable or phone lines - effectively saving your belongings from possible damage or destruction. To enroll, call 1-866-548-3419.

Stay indoors. Don’t venture out unless absolutely necessary.

Don’t use a hard-wired (land line) telephone. Cell phones and cordless phones are safe to use.

Don’t take a shower or a bath. Water and copper tubing are excellent conductors of electricity.

Stay in your car if you are traveling. Automobiles offer excellent protection because the metal bodies conduct electricity away from the occupants. Use extreme caution when driving. Occasionally test your brakes by pumping them.

GREAT FATHER’S DAY OUTING

Hit the links for Father’s Day at the 3rd annual Father & Son Scramble at Winter Park Country Club (WPCC) on Sunday, June 20.

The Country Club is one of Central Florida’s oldest and most beautiful golf courses located at 761 Old England Ave. As mentioned in Golfweek magazine, the WPCC remains a classic golf experience with the same tight fairways and small, domed greens that seemed to baffle the pros. Over the years, the historic golf course has played host to some of golf's greatest legends including Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Walter Hagen.

The WPCC is open to the public and offers junior and family membership packages. Special membership rates are also available for City of Winter Park residents.

For complete information regarding the WPCC, including greens fees, course map and upcoming golf outings, please visit the city's official Web site at www.cityofwinterpark.org > Departments > Parks & Recreation, or call the Pro Shop at 407-599-3339.
