Winter Park finally began its first winning streak of the year Friday night, and the Wildcats did it with the team’s 500th win of all time.

In a defensive game that ended 24-14 with the Wildcats notching a historic milestone, the score was still a tossup until the fourth quarter. Both Winter Park and Freedom had taken the lead repeatedly in the game before the Wildcats stopped some key late drives.

Pass defense would prove a turning point in the game, with defensive end James Washington and defensive back Dvario Montgomery both breaking up big passes that could have led to Freedom scores.

Then the Wildcats kept scoring to put the game away.

Winter Park quarterback Asiantii Woulard once again produced the bulk of his team’s offense, having a hand in all three of his team’s touchdowns.

And in the end the Cats emerged with a 3-2 record and a two-game win streak. They’ll have a bye week before they return to the field to host Evans at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13. The Trojans (4-0) are off to one of their best starts in school history, with four straight wins so far. They’ve amassed a 166-41 point differential in the process, scoring an average of more than 42 points per game while allowing only 10.

Eagles ready for Bears

Edgewater (2-1) has had plenty of time to sharpen their game on the practice field, playing only once in the past three weeks after two bye weeks. They made the most of it against Oak Ridge, winning 14-6 on Sept. 23.

Now coming off their second break, the Eagles will head to Winter Springs (1-3) to play a struggling Bears team that is coming off a 49-0 blowout loss against Lake Brantley.

Quarterback J.B. Woodman will need to find some missing offense to up the Eagles’ chances for a win. The Bears have yet to win a game in which they’ve allowed more than 21 points. That game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6.

JV defense blanks Freedom, 7-0

After suffering a last second loss in its previous game, the host Winter Park JV football team (2-1) returned the favor last week, knocking off Freedom 7-0 on a 9-yard pass from quarterback J.P. Colton to wide receiver/tight end Chase Stutts with 40 seconds left in the game.

“It was a tough-fought defensive struggle, and our defense won the turnover game which proved decisive,” said Wildcats’ coach Scott Hillman.

Winter Park missed a pair of second half field goals, but relied on a stout defense led by sophomore middle linebacker Jacob Gregory. Gregory recovered a Patriots’ fumble at the goal line in the second quarter and returned it 30 yards, then intercepted a pass late in the fourth quarter to set up Winter Park’s winning drive.
