About the Observer

The Winter Park / Maitland Observer ("WPMO") is an award-winning weekly community newspaper covering the highly affluent Central Florida markets of Winter Park, Maitland, Baldwin Park, Goldenrod and College Park. The Observer began publishing in Winter Park in 1989. In 1990 the city of Maitland was added to the Observer coverage area, Baldwin Park was added in 2009 and College Park in 2012.

The Observer is best known today for its independent reporting and commentary on issues of the arts, local schools, youth sports, business, law enforcement, features and community profiles as well as the impact of local government on the community. In each of our weekly newspapers, our opinion pages serve as a forum for community dialogue about local issues.

The Observer is the area's only paid weekly newspaper, with a distribution of 5,000 papers every Thursday and loyal readership well over 10,000. The paper is mailed directly to the subscribers each week. In addition, copies are available in newsstands throughout the Winter Park, Maitland Baldwin Park, Goldenrod and College Park areas.

Special elements in the Observer include:

  • Central Florida Senior (1st Thursday), targeting adults 55+
  • Home Magnifier (2nd Thursday), highlighting real estate
  • Health/Wellness (3rd Thursday)
  • Corner Table restaurant review section (4th Thursday)
  • “Park Style” (last Thursday), focusing on the happenings in and around the avenue!
  • Weekly columns by Chris Jepson (Perspectives), Josh Garrick (Culture Worthy of Your Calendar) and Louis Roney (Play On!)

Submissions

We welcome submissions to our Letters to the Editor section, Calendar, Family Calendar, Community Bulletin and Senior Bulletin. Send all submissions to [email protected].

Letters to the editor should be 400 words or less and include the writer's full name, city in which he or she lives and contact information. Calendar submissions should be in sentence form and contain the event name, place, date/time, admission fee if applicable and a contact number/e-mail/website for more information. Community bulletin items can be any community announcement, including obituaries, commendations or other accomplishments, either by a person or by an entity.

This is a service we provide to the community, and it's always free of charge. Deadlines are 5 p.m. Friday for the following week's issue. If you're looking for a more prominent mention — our blurbs are usually about 25 words — you can contact Linda Stern ([email protected]) for information about a display ad.

Community focus

You'll see a renewed focus on the Observer's coverage area — Winter Park, Maitland, Baldwin Park, Goldenrod and College Park. The newspaper exists to support that community and we will be ramping up our presence at community meetings and events. Let us know how we can improve the newspaper and what you'd like to see us cover. If you think it could be a good story, tell us about it!

Corrections

We strive to bring you unbiased, accurate and compelling stories that you can't find anywhere else. If you see an inaccuracy in the paper, please report it to [email protected]. We will publish any corrections or clarifications immediately on our website and in the next issue of the paper.
