ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Windermere Observer: Drenis Ozuna

Share
Ozuna, a senior on the Olympia baseball team, went 2-for-5 in a 10-7 win versus Oviedo March 15. He hit a three-run walk-off homer — his fourth home run this season — as part of a four-RBI game and has been batting better than .400 this season.

Could you take us through the walk-off homer you had against Oviedo?

I thought (the pitcher) had me at 0-2, and then he hung a curve ball, and then I just hit a three-run homer to win the game.

Was this your first walk-off?

Not the first time, but in high school, yeah.

How did the 6-0 victory March 18 at Lyman (Longwood) go?

I went 1-for-3. I just crossed the plate twice, and that was it. I had a single and a walk.

What do you enjoy most about playing center field?

Chasing down balls, running around, basically. I got to read the ball, make diving plays. You can rob doubles, throw people out.

Which are your favorite MLB team and player?

Boston Red Sox are my favorite team; my favorite MLB player would have to be Torii Hunter. The Red Sox is because my grandpa and I grew up watching them … The way they came back from down 0-3 to the Yankees, ever since then I’ve always watched them. Torii Hunter is because of all the amazing plays he made. He’s a five-tool player — he can do everything. He can hit, run, steal, throw. And I grew up watching him. The (catch on) Barry Bonds I watched at least a hundred times in the All-Star Game.

What's your favorite class in school?

I would have to say I don't know, really. I’d say team sports. (laughs)

What are your plans for after high school?

Probably going to community college, South Florida State College.

Other than baseball, is there anything you have ever thought could be a career for you?

Not really. I really haven't. I thought of going into radiology, doing X-rays and stuff like that.

Given St. Patrick's Day, do you think people of Irish heritage are any luckier in March?

Maybe just a little bit. They do all the little riddles and stuff, so you know, maybe a little bit.

What is your favorite movie?

“The Benchwarmers.” I think it's the remake, not the original one. It's just funny how grown men from back in the day that got bullied beat up on all these other kids that are bullies, just playing baseball.
