With Winter Park’s teams bowing out of the winter sports postseason, Edgewater has stolen the spotlight with some strong performances in the past week at the regional and state levels. Both of the school’s basketball teams remained in the fight for the state title this week, with dreams of glory in Lakeland.

Boys own the court

Edgewater’s boys basketball team propelled itself further into the postseason last week.

The boys team (18-10) had their highest scoring game of the season on Feb. 16, trouncing Palm Bay (18-16) 75-64 in the regional quarterfinal, then edged Heritage (24-5) on Tuesday 50-48 to propel themselves into the regional championship game against Leesburg. That game tips off at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Edgewater.

Lady Eagles soar

Meanwhile Edgewater’s girls basketball team was destroying the competition en route to a state semifinal showdown against Pensacola on Feb. 24 at the Lakeland Center.

In the three games of the postseason the girls (26-4) have won by a combined margin of 246-125, including their most recent 94-61 blowout of Gainesville (24-4) on Feb. 18. That’s not unusual for Edgewater, which has won an astonishing 11 games this season by 50 points or more. In a district game against Mainland Dec. 6, they won 93-10.

Leading the way for the Eagles, Alexis Prince has proven a dominant force at both ends of the court. She led the team with 31 points and eight blocks against Gainesville.

With their most recent route the girls earned a shot at the state semifinals against Pensacola (18-1), which tips off at 10 a.m. Friday in the Lakeland Center.

Wrestlers score

Edgewater’s Jerimiah Benson fought his way to a fourth place finish in the heavily contested 145-pound class at the 2A state wrestling championships on Feb. 18. That series of five bouts in one day included a win by pin in the third round.
