UPDATE: The Orange County Sheriff's Office confirmed Thursday afternoon that the crossing guard is still in critical condition, according to the latest update it received.

A crossing guard was transported to the hospital in critical condition Wednesday after being trapped under a vehicle — the result of a three-vehicle crash in Winter Garden.

According to a statement from the Winter Garden Police Department, officers responded at 3:29 p.m. to reports of a crash at the intersection of West Colonial Drive and Avalon Road.

Three subjects — including a crossing guard who was stuck under a vehicle — were transported to local hospitals after the crash.

Investigators with the Winter Garden Police Department are currently working the incident and will determine if there are any charges in the case. West Colonial Drive eastbound at Avalon Road is closed at this time and will be for several hours, according to the statement from the police.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the crossing guard — who works that intersection of Colonial Drive and Avalon Road — has been employed for almost two years. The crossing is used by students from Tildenville Elementary and Lakeview Middle schools.

"Our crossing guards are an invaluable resource and are integral to keeping the kids of Orange County safe every day when they show up at their posts," OCPS wrote in a statement. "We are praying for the crossing guard’s speedy recovery. We will send updates as we (receive) them."
