Sip wine and stroll downtown Winter Park in an evening of wine and hors d’oeuvres with the first Winter Park Sip, Shop & Stroll of 2015 on Thursday, Feb. 5. The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and Park Avenue Merchants Association are hosting this seasonal event. The city of Winter Park will present tutorials on how to save money on your next utility bill and qualify for possible free home upgrades in energy efficiency workshops! The event is free to attend and will be held in the Winter Park Community Center from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 5. Winter Park Chamber of Commerce’s annual Membership Awards Celebration presented by Century Link and HUB International Florida Kuykendall Gardner will be hosted on Friday, Feb. 6. The evening is a tribute to members and volunteers who make the organization and community so remarkable. The event will be held at The Alfond Inn and begin at 6 p.m. Reservations are required by Friday, Jan. 30. Enjoy an outdoor movie in a beautiful garden at Leu Gardens on Feb. 6. Blankets or chairs are recommended. You may bring a dinner picnic basket. Alcohol is permitted. This movie – “Stuck in Love” – is rated “R”, no one under 17 years of age will be admitted without a parent or adult supervision. The Gardens open at 6 p.m. and the movie shows at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults or free for Leu Members. Admission is collected at the door. Leu Gardens closes at the end of the movie. Baldwin Park First Friday Festival will be 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, along New Broad Street. First Friday is a monthly event where patrons can shop, stroll and sip their way through Baldwin Park's beautiful Village Center. With live music, free samples, food and drink specials (plus much more), there's something for everyone at First Fridays! Come experience a paranormal tour of the Art & History Museums – Maitland’s Maitland Art Center on Feb. 7 with American Ghost Adventures. Attendees will investigate paranormal activity and claims that Andre Smith still lurks on the campus during this two-hour tour. The Carousel Emporium in Orlando proudly presents “An Artist's Affair" with watercolorist Edie Showalter Fagan. Her one-woman show opens on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery located at 2000 Alden Road. The eighth annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk will be 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, around Lake Baldwin. Support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by participating in the walk. Come feel the love at The Sweetest Sounds: A Valentine Concert in Central Park from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art will open its new exhibition on Tuesday, Feb. 10: a collection donated by Los Angeles lawyer and collector Harry C. Sigman. The exhibit features an etched glass vase from 1900 by Emile Gallé, among many other works. Wordier Than Thou's next storytelling and prose open mic night is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Stardust Video and Coffee, located at 1842 Winter Park Road in Orlando. This unique open mic focuses on storytelling – no poetry or music. Come share your finest prose, or if you're just in the mood for listening, catch some tales from our area's wordsmiths. Readings will begin around 7 p.m., with featured readers kicking off the night followed by open mic slots. Open mic readers get 10 minutes and will be timed. Before voting for City Commission seat one and mayor on March 10, the Winter Park Public Library will host a pair of one-hour debates. This allows residents to familiarize themselves with the candidates and to hear directly from them regarding their positions on key issues. Mayoral candidates Steven Leary and Cynthia Mackinnon will respond to moderator and audience questions on Thursday, Feb. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. The debate will be moderated by former WKMG-TV news anchor Lauren Rowe. Join Jacqueline Rolly, of the Tarflower Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, on Feb. 20 for a presentation on Florida’s native plants at the Orlando Garden Club’s meeting, located across from Lake Estelle. Jacqueline, who has been saving plants from construction sites for over 15 years and has learned many techniques and tips for transplanting, propagating, and maintaining Florida’s unique native vegetation. The presentation will cover a short background on the various ecosystems of Florida, and why native plants are important to sustain not only humans but also wildlife.
