Third Annual Chili Cookoff coming

Winter Park Towers, located at 1111 S. Lakemont Ave. in Winter Park Towers, presents its Third Annual Chili Cook-Off Thursday, Feb. 28 at noon to celebrate National Chili Day. The Chili Cook-Off, which will take place in the Stover Center off the Main Lobby, is open to both staff and residents, and it allows everyone an equal opportunity to show off their culinary skills. During the blind judging, each chili is scored on the following criteria: aroma, color, consistency, taste and aftertaste. Previous winners have included both staff and residents. Popcorn Flicks returns to Central Park in Winter Park with Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Ernest Borgnine and Frank Sinatra starring in “From Here to Eternity” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28. It is free and open to the public.

Azar Nafisi, best known for Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books, a book in which she describes her experiences as a secular woman living and working in Iran, will speak Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rollins College Tiedtke Concert Hall, located at 1000 Holt Ave. in Winter Park. “Photo Time” with Julie Little from Little’s Portraits will be Thursday, Feb. 28 at Little’s Portraits, located at 520 Clay Ave. in Winter Park. The Art and History Museums –Maitland (A&H) continues its popular social event for art lovers, Culture & Cocktails, on Friday, March 8 from 6-9 p.m. The event will take place in A&H’s Germaine Marvel Building, located at 210 W. Packwood Ave. This month, artist Gianelle Gelpi is featured in an exhibition that includes a spectrum of her most recent paintings, with large and small brightly rendered acrylic paintings and a sample of her mother-daughter collaborative works. The sixth Annual Doggie Derby will bring the community together to celebrate man’s best friend, while helping kids and families, on Saturday, March 9 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Corrine Commons, Baldwin Park, located at 1913 Meeting Place in Orlando. Canines compete with dogs of similar size in a single-elimination, 25-yard sprint race. Champions are declared and trophies and prizes are awarded in each of the four weight divisions. The highly acclaimed Orlando Ballet School is proud to announce the launch of a 6 week pilot program for Adaptive Dance on April 6. The Adaptive Dance Program was developed in 2002 and was initially a joint venture between Boston Ballet and the Department of Physical Therapy, Children’s Hospital Boston. The program is designed to foster a love of dance and creative expression in children with Down Syndrome.
