The Performing Arts of Maitland is sponsoring an evening of dance and community with a live 17-piece Stage Band at the Maitland Civic Center at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. The event theme and title is ”A Havana Night,” featuring Gary Blalock directing the Maitland Stage Band performing music of Latin origin. Seed Swap at Leu Gardens is 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Orchid Room. Bring your extra seeds packaged in small packets and labeled with the botanical name or common name of the plant and exchange for other seeds you need or want. The event is free. Commercial seed packs opened or unopened are allowed. No invasive plant seeds will be allowed in the Swap. If you don’t have seeds to exchange, Leu Gardens will have seeds to share, up to three packs per family while supplies last.

Enzian Theater will show “Tosca” (Royal Opera House) at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. Lust, treachery and heartbreaking passion, “Tosca” has it all, set to one of Puccini’s most-gleaming scores. The Mid-Florida Milers Walking Club will host a walk in Winter Park on Saturday, Sept. 15. The walk will start at Howell Branch Preserve. Participants can register and start the walk any time between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Each walker will be given a guide with detailed instructions and are welcome to walk with a group, a companion or by themselves. There will be a 6-mile trail and a 3-mile trail, and participants should plan to be finished by 1 p.m. The cost for AVA credit is $3, but free for non-credit walkers. The Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College is opening ”The Mysterious Content of Softness” on Saturday, Sept. 15. The exhibit will display fiber’s connection to the human body and focus on techniques such as knitting, loom weaving and crochet. The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Resource Center is hosting its 6th annual fundraiser event on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Winter Park Civic Center. The 10th Annual Global Peace Film Festival will celebrate its annual event from Monday, Sept. 17, through Sunday, Sept. 23, in various locations in downtown Orlando and Winter Park. This unique film festival draws together filmmakers and filmgoers from all walks of life into a community of people inspired to take action in their daily lives to leave the world a more peaceful place than they found it. The festival includes 44 films from six continents as well as seven films from local Florida filmmakers. The program begins on Sept. 18 with a screening of “The Zen of Bennett” on The Green at Rollins College at 8:30 p.m. From Wednesday through Sunday, films will be presented in Winter Park at the Sun Trust Auditorium, 330 Winter Park Plaza, at Rollins College and at the Winter Park Library. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida is again participating in the Global Peace Film Festival held in Orlando each year. The Holocaust Center in Maitland will have a reception to mark the opening of its new exhibit, “The Civil Rights Struggle, African-American GIs, and Germany.” The reception will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, and will feature Dr. Alzo Reddick, the Director of Special Programs and Defense Transition Services at UCF. Special guests will include two local Tuskegee Airmen, Daniel Keel of Clermont and Richard Hall of Maitland. One of the nearly forgotten stories of the Holocaust is the history of African-American GIs. The Polasek Gardens will host five Tai Chi sessions with instructor Bill Burnette. The sessions will be hosted in the sculpture gardens and are open for beginners and those already practiced in Tai Chi.
