Central Florida is the most popular tourist destination in the world, but there is much to see and do beyond the theme parks. 90.7 WMFE Speaker Series presents “Beyond the Theme Parks: Exploring Central Florida” with Dr. Ben Brotemarkle, host of Florida Frontiers, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, at WMFE Studios, located at 11510 E. JULY 12

Join the city of Winter Park and the Orlando Big Band in their support of the Pulse shooting victims at “#OrlandoUnited: a Winter Park Tribute” on Tuesday, July 12, in Central Park in Winter Park. The OneBlood Bus will be available from 2 to 7 p.m. at the corner of Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue and an Orlando Big Band concert will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the Central Park Main Stage. Park Avenue Merchants Association merchants will also host a “Shop and Share” event on July 12 with proceeds to benefit the Better Together Fund set up by the Central Florida Foundation. The St. Margaret Mary Annual Rummage Sale runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, and Friday, July 15, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, located at 560 N. Park Ave. This rummage sale is like attending hundreds of garage sales or yard sales under one roof. The event is rain or shine, and hosted in a dry, cool and shaded area in air conditioning. All proceeds benefit the church’s brothers and sisters in Haiti.

If you or someone you care about has type 2 diabetes, this six-week workshop can help you take charge of your life and be back in control. You’ll get the support you need, find practical ways to discover better nutrition and exercise choices, deal with stress, understand medication usage, foot care and learn better ways to talk with your health care professionals. This six-week workshop is every Thursday, from July 14 to Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will be held at the John H. Jackson Community Center, 1002 Carter St. Orlando. The Winter Park YMCA presents a viewing of “Inside Out” at their Dive-In Movie at Cady Way Pool at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 15, at 2526 Cady Way in Winter Park. It is open to the public and folks need not be a Y member to attend. Movie meals will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The movie begins at 8:15 p.m. Cost is $5 per person. Get your walking shoes ready and come join the Mid-Florida Milers Walking Club in Maitland on Saturday, July 16. The walk will start at Maitland Community Park, located at 1400 Mayo Rd. Register and start the walk any time between 8:30 and 10 a.m. Participants may choose either a 3-mile or 6-mile trail, and should plan so they can finish by 1 p.m. The walk route goes through Maitland’s residential areas, is shaded, and includes views of scenic lakes. Please bring water. The trails are suitable for strollers, but there might be some difficulty for wheelchairs. Pets are permitted and the walk is free for non-credit walkers; those maintaining record books will pay $3. Participants are welcome to sign up beforehand for a post-walk picnic lunch (small fee required). The walk is sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association and is open to the public. Walkers are given a guide with detailed written instructions and are welcome to walk with a group, a companion, or by themselves. Join the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce as they proudly bring the business community and candidates running for elected office together for an evening of grassroots politics at the 2016 Winter Park Political Mingle and Straw Poll presented by Charter Spectrum. This event will take place on Tuesday, July 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. and will be located at the Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center. Individual tickets will be $25 and a package of 10 tickets can be purchased for $225. The evening will be filled with casual conversations with candidates, mingling with fellow business and community leaders, live entertainment from Central Florida Community Arts, food and drinks. The highlight of the event is always the straw poll results. Operated by the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office, the informal poll takes the political pulse of attendees on a variety of ballot issues and races that directly affect the Winter Park community.
