MAY 6

The seventh annual Black and White Weekend runs from Friday, May 6, to Sunday, May 8, at the Rosen Plaza Hotel, located at 9700 International Drive in Orlando. Come join up to 800 others for an amazing evening and weekend of food, drinks, dancing, fun, pool and lots of entertainment. The main Black and White event is Friday, May 6, starting at 8:30 p.m. inside the Rosen Plaza. Orlando’s fashion and art communities will come together to create the second annual Art of Fashion at the Orlando Museum of Art on Friday, May 6, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. This unique event will pair the latest fashion trends from Orlando’s favorite designers, retailers and stylists with creative works from Central Florida's most talented artists. Attendees can take in the hottest looks for spring and summer while discovering new artists. There will be a silent auction as well as food and drinks from Bento Sushi Cafe. The Youth Musical Theatre Company of CFCArts invites Central Floridians to be their guests as it presents a “tale as old as time” in a romantic and beloved take on the classic fairytale, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” The production will be held on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7, at 7 p.m. at Cornerstone Charter Academy. A Falun Dafa exercise demonstration and instruction will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 7, at Mead Garden, located at 1300 S. Denning Drive in Winter Park. Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, is an advanced self cultivation system that improves mental and physical wellness through physical exercises and the development of one’s character (in Chinese: Xinxing). The exciting ambiance of the Kentucky Derby is brought right here to Winter Park at the Derby on Park event from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Winter Park Country Club, located at 761 Old England Ave. in Winter Park. Come view a live broadcast of the Kentucky Derby at the Winter Park Country Club. This themed event boasts unlimited craft beer and wine along with samplings of delicious food and desserts from various local vendors for all in attendance. Guests are encouraged to dress in their finest Derby attire and win prizes for best-dressed in several categories. Cost of entry is $69. Tickets are limited. Join the Winter Park History Museum for the grand opening of its newest exhibit, “Winter Park: The War Years, 1941-1945,” highlighting home front life in an American small town on Thursday, May 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibit features a recreated and “hands on” living room, children’s room, and kitchen of the 1940s, as well as a comprehensive salute to the servicemen and women from Winter Park. There will be a live performance by the Orlando Big Band, with snacks and beverages being served. Attire is casual dress or 1940s costume. The event is free and open to the public. Come out free a free outdoor movie in Winter Park’s Central Park as the Popcorn Flicks in the Park series hosts a viewing of "Sense and Sensibility" from 8 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, presented by Winter Park CRA and produced by Enzian Theater. The classic musical “The Fantasticks” will be professionally performed by The Winter Park Playhouse. The show will run from Friday, May 13, to Sunday, May 22, and Thursday, June 2, to Saturday, June 11. Join 90.7 WMFE for a live taping of Intersection, their semiweekly news and in-depth conversation program, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, at The Social, located at 54 N. Orange Ave. in Orlando. Hear from emerging local musicians about the state of the music scene in Central Florida, as well as what shapes and inspires their music. Guests include Beemo, an acoustic Americana band with mountain music roots, and Billy Wright, a singer-songwriter with “Maroon 5 meets Lenny Kravitz” pop melodic smooth sound. Hang out after the taping of the Intersection Live show for more music from Beemo and Billy Wright, as well as a ZipOde Throwdown to kick-off WMFE’s Young Friends of 90.7 WMFE group. The Steinway Society of Central Florida will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a kick-off concert at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, at Steinway Piano Galleries. Help the Orlando Senior Help Desk hit a hole-in-one on behalf of Central Florida’s elder community at the PGS tournament on Sunday, May 15, at Alaqua Country Club in Longwood sponsored by the Jewish Pavilion. Tee up for a morning of golf, food and prizes, in honor of Carol Feuerman, Pavilion past president. Monies raised will benefit the Orlando Senior Help Desk, a free helpline which helps older adults and their families of all faiths with all matters relating to aging and elder services.
