The Maitland Fire Department is coming to the library! Join the real heroes of the community to finish out The Maitland Public Library’s Summer Reading Program! Get fizzy with it! Celebrate National Root Beer Float Day on Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Shake Shack in Winter Park. Stop in for an all-natural update on a classic root beer float! Each Shack float starts with a long pull of draft root beer from the Shack’s sudsy southern buds at Abita Brewing Company. Then comes a scoop of their rich, dense and creamy frozen custard, spun fresh daily at each Shack. So come on in and cool down as the summer heats up!

Central Florida Community Arts’ fifth annual Summer Classical season concert will feature “The Brahms Requiem,” said to be one of Brahms’ most popular and beautiful pieces. The CFCArts Classical Choir will perform the work along with a full chamber orchestra. The show will take place on Thursday, Aug. 6, and Friday, Aug. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Maitland. Tickets are on sale for $10 per person. On Saturdays, Aug. 8 and Aug. 15, the Winter Park Volleyball Club will be hosting tryouts for the upcoming girls mini-club volleyball season. Girls age 12 and younger should arrive for registration at 9 a.m. and tryouts will be from 10 a.m. to noon. Girls age 13 and older should arrive for registration at 12:30 p.m. and tryouts will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $50 per player. Central Florida’s most celebrated chefs will gather from 6:45 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Orlando World Center Marriott to cook up support for the 26th installment of Orlando's Taste of the Nation for No Kid Hungry. Forty-four of the area’s most accomplished chefs will showcase tasting portions of signature dishes, accompanied by fine wines, craft beers and specialty cocktails, to ensure that no child grows up hungry in our city and across America. Newcomers include Artist Point at Disney's Wilderness Lodge Resort, Black Fire Bull, MOOR and Old Hickory Steakhouse at Gaylord Palms Resort, Highball and Harvest at Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, Itta Bena, Lafayette's Music Room, Tapa Toro Tapas Bar, TR Fire Grill, The Whiskey, Urban Tide Hyatt Regency, and Yak & Yeti at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Nerd alert! The Orlando Nerd Fest is a celebration of all things nerdy and will be hosted at the Orlando Science Center this year. The event will feature two concert stages with nerd-related musicians whose genres include nerdcore, steampunk, anime, comedy and more! In addition to live music, the festival will include artwork displays, video games, science fiction and fantasy vendors, as well as admission to “Mummies of the World: The Exhibition.” The event will also include a 21-and-up lounge after 6 p.m. This event will be a different experience for regular science center visitors. The Third Marine Division Association will hold its 61st annual family reunion at the DoubleTree Hotel, located at 5780 Major Blvd. in Orlando from Tuesday, Aug. 11, to Sunday, Aug. 16. Join the Maitland Public Library on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at their Fresh for Kids Cooking Class, where each month they focus on a new fruit or vegetable and prepare easy hands-on recipes. Join the Alzheimer's Association for the Memories in the Making Program on Monday, Aug. 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Maitland Public Library. This is a free art program led by a trained artist that provides people experiencing early stage Alzheimer's and dementia with a forum to express themselves through watercolor painting and drawing. Bring your extra seeds and exchange them for other seeds at Leu Gardens’ Seed Swap from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 19. Participation is easy: Pack your seeds in small packets and label each – labels should include botanical name and/or common name, some swappers include pictures of the plants. Commercial seed packs opened and unopened are allowed. Invasive plant seeds are not allowed. You can trade evenly or donate to the swap. Choose seed packs you want to try. The Audubon Center for Birds of Prey will kick of a new program series “Birds Before Bedtime,” hosted on the third Thursday of the month (beginning in August and running through November). The first session will be Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. Programs feature crafts, birds, songs, stories, snacks, and lots of fun for children ages 3 to 10 and their parents. Each night the Center will have different activities based on that evening’s theme. The cost is $5 for adults, and $4 for children. Morse Blvd. These short, 30-minute, one-on-one talks are offered to help you navigate through the survey and allow the visioning team to talk with you about the overall process, find out how to reach others, and identify willingness to co-create the plan.
