JULY 24

The Winter Park Playhouse sets sail with the well-loved tap-dancing musical comedy “Dames At Sea.” Set in New York City, this quintessential American musical features the hottest tap dancing this side of 42nd Street has ever seen! This is the first production in a series of six professional musicals the Playhouse is offering through June 2016. The show runs July 24 through Aug. 22. Six food trucks will be on hand at the Maitland Civic Center on Friday, July 24, for the city’s monthly Food Truck Bazaar from 6 to 9 p.m. In addition to air-conditioned seating, free parking, a lakeside view, and live entertainment provided by Preforming Arts of Maitland Market Players, this week’s event will feature a kid-friendly showing of the movie “Madagascar.” Visit maitlandciviccenter.com for more information.

Enjoy family, fun, and food at the Winter Park Community Center Pool for a Poolside Picnic Party. There will be games, contests, prizes and drawings for a free admission punch pass and annual lap swim pass for the remainder of the season! Happy birthday, Maitland! The city of Maitland will be celebrating its 130th birthday with a bang at Lake Lily Park on Saturday, July 25, at 6 p.m. This family friendly event will feature lots of entertainment, including a touch-a-truck exhibit, hair braiders, balloon artists, face painters, and carnival games. Bring your appetite for American summer eats and treats with hotdogs, hamburgers, popcorn and Jeremiah's Italian Ice, all available for purchase. Join Keep Winter Park Beautiful and help clean up Lake Osceola and areas within the watershed. Groups will meet at North Central Park at 8 a.m. on July 25 and then be deployed to predetermined locations based upon participation. Equipment will be supplied by the city of Winter Park. Complimentary volunteer appreciation breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. T-shirts and water bottles will be available while supplies last. The Center for Contemporary Dance, a 14-year-old nonprofit dance education, production and incubation center located in Winter Park, has partnered with Orlando Ballet School and National Dance Day Orlando Founder/Creative Director Holly Harris to present this year's celebration on Saturday, July 25. Activities include free dance classes led by the area's top dance educators and designed for students of all ages, levels and abilities. The day also includes free performances by Orlando's most respected professional dance companies. Morning classes and performances take place at Orlando Cultural Park, located at 530 E. Princeton St. in Orlando, across from Loch Haven Park. Additional morning and afternoon classes take place within walking distance of the park at Orlando Ballet School Central Campus, located at 2201 McRae Ave. in Orlando. Welbourne Avenue Nursery and Kindergarten’s second annual Friends Family FUN Bowl-A-Thon runs from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, at Aloma Bowling Center, located at 2530 Aloma Ave. in Winter Park. A cost of $25 includes two hours of bowling, shoes, half cheese and half pepperoni topping pizza per lane and one pitcher of soda per lane. The Winter Park Sunday Running Group has been a source of pleasant running experiences and friendships for hundreds of runners over 40 years. Join them every Sunday starting July 26 at 7 a.m. starting along Park Avenue at Welbourne Avenue. They encourage and welcome runners of all ages and speeds to join them on the course, which offers exceptional scenery throughout Winter Park. The most popular distances range from 5 to 10 miles, but the course easily accommodates shorter loops of 3 or 4 miles. Visit orlandorunnersclub.org

Join Winter Park locals at Mead Garden on Sunday, July 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. for all the fun as they volunteer to help grounds maintenance. You've heard yoga is good for your health, but why? Separate out myths from facts at the Healing with Yoga class, hosted by Jewish Family Services. This class will cover the basic history and practice of yoga, as well as introduce meditation and chanting. Yoga instructors will explain the differences between common yoga classes offered at gyms and studios and answer any questions. No mats or props are required for participation. The class will take place Sunday, Aug. 2, from 3 to 4 p.m. at 2100 Lee Road in Winter Park. The event is free of charge but space is limited. On Monday, Aug. 3, the University Club of Winter Park presents “Colonial Complexities: Mexico in the 16th Century” by Dr. Amy Gelfin. Gelfin will examine Viceregal Mexico through social, cultural and political lenses. She will address the clergy, marriage and language among other aspects of the first hundred years of Spanish occupation of Mexico. Amy Gelfin, Ph.D.is a curator of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum. She is the former associate curator of the Art of the Americas at the San Diego Museum of Art. Her recent curatorial efforts include women and abstraction and women, war, and industry. The University Club is located at 841 N. Park Ave. and this presentation is free to all members and guests.

AUG. 5

Join the Alzheimer's Association for a free Praise for a Purpose Service. This is a free non-denominational service offered the first Wednesday of the month, specifically designed for individuals with dementia and their families. Join them for music, refreshments and fellowship on Wednesday, Aug. 5, starting at 1 p.m. at Aloma United Methodist Church, located at 3045 Aloma Ave. in Winter Park. AUG. 7

Central Florida Community Arts’ fifth annual Summer Classical season concert will feature “The Brahms Requiem,” said to be one of Brahms’ most popular and beautiful pieces. The CFCArts Classical Choir will perform the work along with a full chamber orchestra. The show will take place on Thursday, Aug. 6, and Friday, Aug. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Maitland. Tickets are on sale for $10 per person. AUG. 8

On Saturdays, Aug. 8 and Aug. 15, the Winter Park Volleyball Club will be hosting tryouts for the upcoming girls mini-club volleyball season. Girls age 12 and younger should arrive for registration at 9 a.m. and tryouts will be from 10 a.m. to noon. Girls age 13 and older should arrive for registration at 12:30 p.m. and tryouts will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $50 per player. The Vision Winter Park team is continuing to work with the community in setting the stage to guide the vision for the city’s future. For those that have not already submitted a survey online, the team is inviting you to join the 300-plus people in the conversation at the upcoming Community Talk dates on Thursdays, between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., July 30, Aug. 6, Aug. 13, and Aug. 27. Community Talks are held at the Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center, located at 1050 W. Morse Blvd. These short, 30-minute, one-on-one talks are offered to help you navigate through the survey and allow the visioning team to talk with you about the overall process, find out how to reach others, and identify willingness to co-create the plan.
