The Center for Independent Living’s “Spring into Health” fair serves to increase disability awareness and sensitivity. During the event, attendees can take a hearing test to see if they qualify for free amplified telephones, speak with medical professionals to learn more about common health issues, and learn what resources are available to help people with disabilities live independently in their own homes. They event will be on Thursday, April 19, at the Center for Independent Living offices located at 720 N. Denning Drive in Winter Park from 2 to 6 p.m. It is free to attend.

APRIL 20

The Winter Park Playhouse proudly presents the Tony-Nominated hit Broadway musical “Baby” from April 20 to May 12. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, at 2 p.m. select Sundays (April 29 and May 6), at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 10. The Third Annual Hannibal Square Heritage Center Folk Art and Traditional Craft Festival is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 21, at the Center, located at 642 New England Ave. in Winter Park. The Center’s Third Annual Folk Art and Traditional Craft Festival will feature work for sale by Florida artists including the original Florida Highwaymen painters and Crealdé ceramicists, as well as live folk music and local soul food. The festival will also feature a “Kid Folk” Storybook Workshop for ages 4 and older. Events and exhibits are free to the public.

The city of Winter Park in partnership with Waste Pro will be offering hazardous waste disposal for all city residents on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Public Works Compound located at 1439 Howell Branch Road, directly behind Fire Station 64. The following items will be accepted: fertilizers and pesticides, antifreeze, propane tanks, paint and paint thinners, batteries, pool chemicals, household chemicals, tires, used motor oil and electronic waste. This includes computers, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, fax machines, CD players and stereos.

Please bring a driver’s license or utility bill statement as proof of city residency along with your hazardous waste items. Thank you for helping keep the city green and properly disposing of hazardous waste materials. Call 407-599-3364.

James Gamble Rogers II Colloquium on Historic Preservation "Back to the Future" is Saturday, April 21, at the Winter Park Community Center. This year's event will celebrate mid-century modern architecture with a panel discussion beginning at 10 a.m. entitled "Preserving the Recent Past." The Mid-Florida Milers Walking Club promotes recreational walking for fun and fitness and will host a walk in Winter Park, starting at Mead Garden, on April 21. The Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens hosts the Fourth Annual Winter Park Paint Out on April 22-28. Twenty-six of the finest “plein air” artists will be painting throughout Winter Park, capturing local landscapes and landmarks with oils, watercolors and pastels. It concludes with a special ticketed evening event — The Paint Out Garden Party — which takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. All artists will be present, and attendees are able to discuss and purchase their works. Tickets are $45 in advance, $60 at the door. Space is limited. The Annual Friends of First Response-Maitland Kickball Fundraiser is Sunday, April 22. Florida Hospital invites the public to attend a free event where Sister Madonna Buder, known as the Iron Nun, gives a few words on the prospects of body, mind and spirit. State Rep. Bryan Nelson (R-Apopka) will be hosting a business summit on Tuesday, April 24, in Apopka, and encourages local employers, business leaders and family members of individuals with disabilities to attend. The Central Florida Watercolor Society will exhibit members’ works in "Watercolor Impressions,” which takes place April 24 to July 15 at the Garden House Gallery in Leu Gardens, 1920 N. Hillstone, formerly known as Houston's, is hosting the Sunset "Paint-In" on Lake Killarney at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25. The public is invited to watch as 26 artists gather on the lakeshore to capture on canvas the beauty of a sunset. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida will honor Dr. Richard Lapchick at its 2012 Dinner of Tribute at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, at the Rosen Plaza Hotel, 9700 International Drive in Orlando. A rummage sale to raise money to decorate Habitat for Humanity homes built in Winter Park is Thursday – Saturday, April 26–28, in the back parking lot off Denning Drive on the campus of Winter Park TECH. The hours will be from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day. This year we have donations from our students, staff and Ashton Woods Homes from their model homes. Good buys are the name of our game.

Self-taught and nationally recognized African-American artist Missionary Mary Proctor is holding an exhibit of her highly distinctive work through Saturday, April 21, at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center in Winter Park. The exhibit will showcase work from Proctor’s personal collection in Tallahassee, as well as the permanent collection from the Mennello Museum of American Art. The exhibit will culminate with the third annual Hannibal Square Heritage Center Folk Art and Traditional Craft Festival on Saturday, April 21.
