The businesses that Summerport Village has to offer are growing. Residents can easily walk or bike to a salon, dance studio and happy hour hotspot on Bridgewater Crossings Blvd.

But there was one type of business that residents wanted to see in their community: a coffee shop.

Max Martinez, a seven-year resident of the area and 20-year veteran of the restaurant industry, decided to give the people what they wanted. He opened Summerport Cafe in mid-November.

“The main goal is to create a place for the family to enjoy and have a good time, and to have healthy food,” Martinez said. “The most important part is the input from the community—to have what they want, what they need.”

Whether customers need a morning jolt or afternoon boost, coffee and espresso drinks are available at the cafe. Island Oasis smoothies have also been a popular item so far.

For a quick lunch, customers can select a grab-and-go item, such as a chicken spinach wrap or ham and cheese croissant. There are also chips, cookies, salads and fruit, and baked goods such as empanadas and cakes.

Customers can pick up a punch card to earn their sixth beverage free after five purchased.

There will be a grand opening event in early December. Check the cafe’s Facebook page for updates and details.

Martinez is co-owner of Tavernere, a company that he hopes will eventually manage restaurants and cafes throughout Florida. Another Tavernere establishment will soon be opening in Miami.
