The popular Pokemon Go game was discussed in a previous Ocoee Commission meeting, but they were not sharing how many Pokemon they’ve caught.

Instead, the commissioners discussed the problems its players are inadvertently creating for the city: They are hogging all the parking spaces.

The brief discussion was sparked by an inquiry by Mayor Rusty Johnson, who asked whether the city should take action in regards to all the residents roaming around Bill Breeze Park at the Ocoee Lakeshore Center.

“There’s a lot of folks in the park looking for Pokemon … you know, they’re in the park, and to me, you know they’re outside and enjoying the outdoors, and that’s fine. But one concern was the parking when we’re having an event going on,” Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen said.

Mayor Johnson and other commissioners also added that they’ve noticed all the trashcans have been full recently, with some of it even littering the ground. However, the main trouble appears to be how the Pokemon players occasionally fill the Ocoee Lakeshore Center’s already limited parking lot to capacity, making parking difficult for guests who rent the facility for events.

The question was asked if GPS coordinates in certain parts of city property can be removed from the game. The consensus was that something had to be done, but City Commissioners are unsure what, considering the players could also bring business once the downtown area is fully renovated.

“It’s an interesting issue because it does bring people to our park … we will want to see people in our park and our downtown area when we improve it,” Commissioner Wilsen said. “But again the drawback is the parking issue during an event … but it doesn’t appear they’ve done anything yet, so they’ll come back to the issue.”

During the meeting, City Manager Robert Frank also offered the suggestion of closing off the parking lot if there is an upcoming event, but no final decisions have been made.
